Minister of Culture Ernest Urtasun will stand as the second candidate on the Comuns–Front Ampli list for Barcelona in the upcoming [general election](https://barna.news/spain-general-election-29-november-2026-barcelona/) on Sunday 29 November.

The announcement was confirmed by the Comuns party in a statement issued on Saturday 17 October, following an extraordinary National Council held the previous evening in Barcelona, where Urtasun received 94.1% support from members.

He will run directly behind former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau, who has been designated as the lead candidate for the Spanish presidency and will head the candidacy in Barcelona. The electoral alliance, named Comuns–Front Ampli, aims to contest the general election with a unified platform focused on social justice and plurinational recognition.

The National Council also ratified the broader coalition agreement within Front Ampli, with 94.8% of members backing the alliance. The Comuns described Colau’s top position as reflecting an "unequivocal commitment" to recognising Spain’s plurinational character.

> We cannot allow Catalonia to fall into the sphere of influence of Donald Trump with a government of PP and Vox. It is not the time to take any step back and that is why I have decided to take the step in this battle.

Urtasun, in a video circulated on social media, defended his three years in government and described the 29 November election as a "transcendental battle". He and Colau are scheduled to speak at the official presentation of the candidacy in Madrid later today.

The Front Ampli coalition includes four political parties, united in their support for Colau as the lead candidate. The alliance seeks to position itself as a progressive alternative in the national political landscape ahead of the November poll.
