ERC has asked Barcelona's Sant Martí district to order 24-hour supermarkets in Poblenou to close from 22:00 to 07:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and public-holiday eves during the neighbourhood's main festival, scheduled for 10–20 September.

The requested measure would affect late-night alcohol purchases during the festival and is aimed at protecting residents' rest and public-space coexistence, according to the party. It is a proposal, not an announced closure order: ERC councillor Lourdes Arrando said the district government had not replied when *Tot Barcelona* reported the request on 1 September.

ERC submitted its written request to the Sant Martí district, Barcelona's eastern municipal district, on Monday 31 August. The party said it wanted a decree covering the specified festival nights, when it expects larger crowds in Poblenou's streets after organised events have ended.

> “We ask the government to act preventively to avoid inconvenience to residents.”Lourdes Arrando, ERC councillor and spokesperson in Sant Martí, speaking to *Tot Barcelona*

## Proposal targets festival nights only

The closure request applies only to 24-hour businesses and only during the Poblenou main festival. ERC says continued late-night trading can facilitate street drinking after festival activities, citing incidents during the 2025 celebrations.

- **Festival dates:** 10–20 September.
- **Requested closing time:** 22:00–07:00.
- **Nights covered:** Fridays, Saturdays and public-holiday eves within the festival period.

## Sant Martí recorded 104 new 24-hour supermarkets in five years

A municipal report prepared at ERC's request found that at least 104 new supermarkets authorised to operate for 24 hours opened across Sant Martí between October 2020 and December 2025, according to reporting by *Metròpoli*. The report recorded 29 openings in 2024 and three in 2025.

It also counted 381 licences of this type across 291 addresses in the district. Municipal inspectors found irregularities at 64 of 75 businesses inspected between October 2023 and November 2025, leading to 19 sanction proceedings, according to the same report.

Barcelona City Council suspended new licences for 24-hour self-service and super-service shops with immediate effect for one year after publication in the Official Gazette of the Province of Barcelona in May. Sant Martí and Ciutat Vella were excluded because they already had their own restrictive rules, the council said.

No overnight closure order for Poblenou's festival nights had been announced when ERC's request was reported.
