**In brief:** Begin at the Barcelona Bar (ICAB). Its free legal guidance service (SOJ) will give you an initial assessment of your case, while the bar's professional search allows you to check that any lawyer is registered before handing over money. Cases worth €2,000 or less can be taken to court without a lawyer. If you have been dismissed, act today: you have 20 working days to challenge a dismissal.

*Last checked 28th October 2026: the free guidance service, small-claims thresholds, the pre-court negotiation rule and the dismissal deadline checked against the Barcelona Bar (ICAB), the Spanish civil procedure law and workers' statute on the BOE, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.*

## What people in Barcelona ask

These are the questions members of a Barcelona English-speakers community of 3,000+ people raise most often.

- What should I look for in a good employment lawyer, and how can I get ready for an initial consultation?
- Who are the lawyers that take on immigration matters, including TIE renewals, highly qualified visas and citizenship, and work in English?
- Can I handle a small claim of about €1,600 on my own?
- How can I locate a sworn translator for official paperwork?
- If I make a Spanish will, will I also need a separate one for assets in my home country?

## How to find the right lawyer, step by step

1. Draft a one-page summary of the issue in English, covering dates, amounts, who said what and the outcome you are seeking. Keep all documents together in a single folder, arranged by date.
2. If funds are limited, or you simply need to establish whether you have a case, turn to the [ICAB legal guidance service (SOJ)](https://www.icab.cat/en/servicios-a-la-ciudadania/justicia-gratuita/servicio-de-orientacion-juridica-puntos-soj/?ref=barna.news). It is free and open to the public, and offers an initial view on whether to pursue court action or another route. The main office is at the Ciutat de la Justícia, Edifici D, Avinguda Carrilet 3, first floor, L'Hospitalet de Llobregat, open Monday to Friday, 9am to 2pm; telephone 93 422 15 45.
3. Should you be eligible for free legal aid (justícia gratuïta), the SOJ can advise; it processes the application.
4. On immigration matters, ICAB also directs people to the Ajuntament's [SAIER service for immigrants, emigrants and refugees](https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/cita/saier?ref=barna.news), which has a dedicated appointment page.
5. Once you have a lawyer's name, confirm their registration through the professional search on the [ICAB website](https://www.icab.cat/?ref=barna.news) ("Necessito un advocat").
6. Before any work begins, request a written fee quote (full de encàrrec / hoja de encargo), and ask whether the first consultation carries a charge.
7. In your first email, ask whether the lawyer can work with you in English and whether any documents will require sworn translation.

## Small claims: when you do not need a lawyer

In Spain, civil procedure law allows you to file a claim on your own, without an advocat (lawyer) or a procurador (court representative), provided it is a **juicio verbal** for €2,000 or less. Neither professional is required either to submit the opening petition of a **procedimiento monitorio**, the fast-track route for recovering unpaid debts.

One requirement is often overlooked. Since Ley Orgánica 1/2025, the efficiency law, took effect, most civil claims are admitted only where you have first attempted an "adequate means of dispute resolution" concerning the same subject matter: mediation, conciliation, a binding confidential offer or another recognised form of negotiation. You should keep evidence of that attempt (a burofax is the usual method), as the court will request it.

## Employment problems: the 20-day clock

Workers who are dismissed have 20 working days (días hábiles) under the workers' statute to contest the decision, and that time limit is applied strictly. Lodging a conciliation request with the public mediation body stops the clock. Claims stemming from an employment contract in general lapse one year after the contract comes to an end. Anyone who believes their dismissal was unfair should seek advice during the first week rather than the third. ICAB runs a separate labour-law guidance point in the same Ciutat de la Justícia building.

## What goes wrong

- **Deadlines missed.** Every year people come unstuck over the 20-working-day limit for a dismissal claim. Another common slip is failing to complete the pre-court negotiation stage of a civil claim.
- **No quote in writing.** Fee arguments tend to begin with something agreed verbally. Make sure the scope of work and the price are set out in writing.
- **Choosing the wrong field.** Immigration, employment, family and property law are separate specialisms. Ask the lawyer how many cases similar to yours they have taken on in the past year.
- **Paying for translations twice.** Before you order any translations, check whether the court or the office requires a sworn version. A standard translation will often be sufficient for briefing your own lawyer.

## Sworn translators and wills

Sworn translators (traductors-intèrprets jurats) are appointed by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and its official register is available on the ministry’s [sworn translators page](https://www.exteriores.gob.es/es/ServiciosAlCiudadano/Paginas/Traductores-Interpretes-Jurados.aspx?ref=barna.news). Check there that a translator is accredited for your language pair before making any payment.

On wills: if you hold assets in another country, whether a separate will is required there hinges on that country’s law as well as Spain’s. To ensure the two documents do not undermine each other, consult the notary drafting your Spanish will and a lawyer in the other country.

## Barcelona specifics

- **Ciutat de la Justícia** stands in L'Hospitalet de Llobregat rather than in Barcelona itself, so allow time to get there.
- **Catalan and Spanish.** Paperwork from the courts and the bar may be issued in either language (advocat / abogado, full de reclamació / hoja de reclamación). If you cannot read Catalan, you are entitled to ask for Spanish.
- **Office hours.** The SOJ main office opens on weekday mornings only, so arrange your visit around work.

## FAQ

### Can I go to court in Spain without a lawyer?

For a juicio verbal claim of €2,000 or less, yes, and the same applies to the initial petition in a monitorio debt claim. Beyond that amount, a lawyer and a procurador are normally required.

### Is there free legal advice in Barcelona?

That is correct. The Barcelona Bar's SOJ service is open to the public, costs nothing and provides an initial assessment of your case. It also processes legal aid applications.

### How long do I have to challenge a dismissal?

Under article 59 of the workers' statute, the window is 20 working days from the dismissal. The deadline is suspended once a conciliation claim is lodged.

### How do I check a lawyer is real?

Look for them via the professional search facility on the Barcelona Bar's website. Every practising lawyer in Barcelona ought to be listed there.

### Do I have to try mediation before suing?

In the majority of civil cases, that is the case: Ley Orgánica 1/2025 generally requires a claimant to have attempted mediation, conciliation, a formal offer or another recognised form of negotiation on the same matter before a court will admit the claim.
