Spain's general election calendar is now in motion after the Official State Gazette (BOE) published Royal Decree 806/2026 on Tuesday, 6 October, formally dissolving parliament and setting the election date for Sunday, 29 November 2026.

The decree, signed by King Felipe VI at the proposal of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, entered into force the same day as its publication, marking the official start of the electoral process. The new Congress of Deputies and Senate will be constituted on 23 December.

Under Article 115 of the Spanish Constitution and Article 42.1 of Organic Law 5/1985 on the General Electoral Regime, the dissolution follows an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers held on 5 October. The election decree structures parliamentary representation by province, with Madrid allocated 38 seats, Barcelona 32, and Valencia 16.

## Coalition and Candidate Deadlines

- Parties have until Friday, 16 October, to register electoral coalitions, the deadline by which alliances such as the Front Ampli, the new banner for Sumar and allied left forces, must confirm their joint lists.
- Candidate lists must be submitted within twenty days of the decree’s publication, making the final deadline 26 October.

The Front Ampli, comprising Comuns, Esquerra Unida, Més Madrid, and Moviment Sumar, is working to finalise alliances with regional parties including Compromís, Chunta Aragonesista, and Més per Mallorca. In the 2023 elections, Sumar registered its coalition just three hours before the deadline.

## Government Measures to Be Re-voted

With parliament dissolved, the ongoing legislative process for housing and social measures known as the 'Maricarmen' package will now be reviewed by the Permanent Delegation of Congress, a 69-member body composed of sitting deputies from current parties.

The Council of Ministers is expected to reapprove the measures on Tuesday, allowing the Permanent Delegation to vote on them during the electoral period. This mechanism, established under Article 78 of the Constitution, allows limited legislative continuity while the country is in an electoral campaign.

Voters will head to the polls nine months earlier than originally scheduled, amid rising public concern over housing affordability. The election was called after the rejection of key housing reforms by parliamentary opposition parties, prompting Sánchez to seek renewed public support for a broader progressive majority.
