Delta Metro Project the long-stalled ‘Delta Metro’ project is back on the table as mayors in the southern Baix Llobregat demand urgent action to address chronic transport congestion and a major population boom. Now, with the area’s population hitting 270,000 and plans for 10,000 new homes in the next 10-15 years, local leaders say the situation is critical. The current transport options-[Rodalies trains](https://barna.news/rodalies-barcelona-loses-1-1-million-passengers-in-november/) and metropolitan buses-are overwhelmed. When trains fail, buses become saturated and get stuck in traffic.

“We’re starting from a deficit,” says Lluïsa Moret, Mayor of Sant Boi and President of the Barcelona Provincial Council. “With this projected population increase, it would be even worse.

According to a report by El Periódico, the Catalan government is now formally studying the option of using [Ferrocarrils de la Generalitat (FGC)](https://barna.news/tmb-rejects-alstom-bid-for-e331m-barcelona-metro-trains/) to build the line.

FGC Emerges as the Preferred Solution Sources confirm the government is evaluating an FGC-led project. The plan involves a new branch from the existing Llobregat-Anoia line at Molí Nou-Ciutat Cooperativa, descending to serve Castelldefels.

Infraestructures Ferroviàries de Catalunya (Ifercat) and FGC will collaborate on a foundational study, funded by around €400,000\. The tender is expected in the coming weeks, with work [starting in autumn 2026](https://barna.news/barcelona-metro-works-continue-until-2026-openings-in-2027/). However, the mayors largely agree that FGC is the most realistic option.

This new push follows a 2022 study commissioned by the national government, which explored alternatives but whose conclusions were never published. The current initiative, led by the Generalitat, appears to have more momentum.
