The Quantum Nanofabrication Area within the institute’s Micro and Nanofabrication Clean Room is now operational, representing a cornerstone of Spain’s Strategic Project for the Recovery and Economic Transformation of Microelectronics and Semiconductors (PERTE Chip). This facility is the main node of the Unique Scientific and Technical Infrastructure (ICTS) MICRONANOFABS, a nationally recognised research platform. It will strengthen scientific capacity in microelectronics and support the transition from fundamental research to industrial device development. --- ## Funded by EU Recovery Plan, Aligned With European Strategy The expansion was made possible through an additional €62.5 million in funding from the Ministry of Science and Innovation, allocated under the addendum to Spain’s Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan. These funds are part of broader public investment totalling €12.25 billion for the PERTE Chip initiative through 2027. > The PERTE Chip is long-term, it will progress in phases, it will be built with public-private collaboration, and in an integrated and aligned way with the European chip strategy. The project aligns with the European Chips Act, which aims to mobilise over €43 billion in public and private investment across the EU by 2030 to boost semiconductor resilience and innovation in technologies including quantum computing. ### Focus on Training and Industrial Collaboration Beyond research and fabrication, the IMB-CNM will play a key role in training professionals in quantum and microelectronic technologies. Its facilities offer expertise in the design and manufacture of electronic systems, supporting both academic research and private-sector innovation. The government intends for Spain to become a benchmark in chip design and manufacturing, leveraging European funds to build pilot plants capable of producing chips smaller than 5 nanometres. Public-private partnerships will drive development across the semiconductor value chain, from R&D to large-scale production.
