The closure of footpaths and restricted access, enforced to contain the virus, have devastated local businesses dependent on outdoor recreation. Restaurants that once thrived on morning trade from cyclists and hikers now face unsustainable losses, with some fearing closure before government aid arrives. --- ## Family Businesses Struggle to Survive Masia Can Jané, a traditional Catalan restaurant near the Sant Medir hermitage in Sant Cugat del Vallès, has lost nearly all its breakfast customers, who typically arrived by bike or on foot. Manager Isidre Jané confirmed the business has reduced staff from twelve to nine and estimates a 30 to 40 per cent drop in turnover compared to a normal season. > In a way, it was better during lockdown. You had no staff expenses, and everything was closed. Now the problem is that you're open and can't generate revenue. The family-run business must wait to assess eligibility for recently announced government support, but for now, survival means holding on with minimal income. --- ## Widespread Impact Across the Park El Racó de Collserola in Vallvidrera, which opened just before the pandemic, has seen up to 60 per cent of its turnover vanish. Owner Thais de las Heras, who runs three establishments in the area, said most of her clientele were cyclists and hikers. Now, only local residents and a few visitors arriving by car or train remain. Staff has been cut from fifteen to eight across the three sites, and the business is considering freezing one concession or closing it entirely. At Can Coll in Cerdanyola del Vallès, manager Xavi Vila said the restaurant receives 70 to 80 fewer visitors each Sunday than before the outbreak. Specialising in grilled meats and calçotades, the restaurant relies heavily on mountain enthusiasts. > People who enjoy the mountains don't want to be cooped up at home for so many days; they go somewhere else. Even though summer is traditionally slow, Vila expressed uncertainty about whether they will be able to host winter calçotades, a key revenue source. ### Local Agricultural Events Continue Despite the closures, efforts to promote local produce continue. The Ajuntament de Sant Cugat and DeCollserola are running Tasta Mandó 2026, a programme celebrating the local Mandó tomato, with events from July to September, including tastings, cooking demonstrations and a farmers' market on 7 September. Twenty-eight restaurants in Sant Cugat, including some in the Collserola area, are featuring Mandó tomato dishes on their menus.
