The district of Ciutat Meridiana in northern Barcelona has the lowest average income per person in the city, at €8,913 annually, according to data from the Institut d'Estadística de Catalunya. This places it 52% below the citywide average of €18,404 per person and 70.6% below the wealthiest district, Les Tres Torres.

## Historical Development and Ongoing Challenges

Ciutat Meridiana, located in the Nou Barris district, was developed in 1963 under the initiative of a promoter group led by Joan Antoni Samaranch. The area was previously agricultural land that had been deemed unsuitable for a cemetery due to high soil moisture. Urbanisation during the Franco era prioritised housing construction over essential services. Early residents faced poor living conditions, including damp housing, and campaigned for basic infrastructure such as health centres, schools, and improved sanitation.

### Gradual Improvements

Following the transition to democratic local government, efforts began to address historical deficits. The neighbourhood has since gained healthcare, cultural, and educational facilities, along with upgraded streets and mechanical staircases to manage its steep terrain. Despite these improvements, income disparities between Ciutat Meridiana and wealthier parts of Barcelona remain stark. The contrast underscores deep-seated economic inequalities across the city.

The 10-kilometre distance between Les Tres Torres and Ciutat Meridiana symbolises a much greater social and economic divide, with one neighbourhood earning more than triple the income of the other.
