# Catalonia's jobless rate rises to 8.3%

## Unemployment rises in Catalonia

The unemployment rate in Catalonia has risen to 8.3% in the third quarter of 2026, according to the Active Population Survey (EPA) published on Tuesday 27 October by the National Statistics Institute (INE). This marks an increase from 7.9% in the previous quarter. There are now 361,800 people unemployed in the region, up by 18,900 compared to the second quarter of the year, a rise of 5.5%. Catalonia ranks as the seventh autonomous community in Spain with the largest absolute increase in unemployment between July and September.

## National and regional comparisons

Across Spain, unemployment increased by 95,900 people in the same period, or 3.84%, bringing the national jobless rate to 10.18% with 2.59 million unemployed. Catalonia continues to perform below the national average in terms of unemployment. Compared to the same period in 2025, Catalonia has 49,300 more unemployed people, a relative increase of 2.76%.

### Employment figures

The number of employed people in Catalonia reached 3.999 million in the third quarter, a 0.05% rise from the previous quarter and 1.25% higher than the same period last year. This represents 53,100 more employed people than in the third quarter of 2025\. The population aged 16 and over in Catalonia stands at 7.01 million, with an active population of 4.36 million. The inactive population was recorded at 2.65 million, consistent with figures from June 2026.
