UOC criminology professor Marc Balcells noted that these criminals likely lack connections to the formal art market, treating stolen items as raw material rather than cultural assets. Francisco de la Fuente, former security director at Madrid’s Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum and spokesperson for Protecturi, the heritage security directors’ association, argued for legislative change. He advocates making it mandatory for all museums to appoint a dedicated security director, even if one person oversees multiple smaller institutions. He also pointed out that such roles are more common in Spain than in France, where they remain rare, despite rising threats. Dr Molina added that staff training should be expanded to detect suspicious visitor behaviour, especially given evidence that recent robberies were pre-planned. While Catalonia has not suffered a major museum heist recently, the region holds significant cultural treasures. Among past losses is the Sijena peace-bearer, a 1400 Gothic goldsmithing piece stolen from the National Art Museum of Catalonia (MNAC) in 1991 during renovations. It remains on Interpol’s list of most wanted stolen artworks. The MNAC now operates a 24-hour control room overseeing nearly 500 cameras, reflecting upgrades since the earlier theft.
