# Catalonia inflation hits 4% in August

## Year-on-year inflation reaches highest level since 2023

The Consumer Price Index (IPC) in Catalonia reached 4% in August compared to the same month last year, according to data published on Tuesday by Spain’s National Statistics Institute (INE). This marks the highest annual inflation rate in the region since March 2023 and follows a rise from 3.5% in July. Transport costs had the largest impact, rising 8.2% year-on-year, followed by restaurants and accommodation at +6.5% and recreation at +5.1%. Housing (+4.3%), financial services (+4%) and communications (+3.8%) also contributed significantly to the increase.

## Cost of living varies across provinces

Inflation rates differed across Catalonia’s provinces, with Girona recording the highest annual increase at 4.8%, followed by Tarragona at 4.4%, Lleida at 4.2% and Barcelona at 3.8%. On a monthly basis, prices rose by 0.9% in Tarragona and Lleida, 0.8% in Girona and 0.5% in Barcelona between July and August.

## Catalonia below national average as Spain hits 4.3%

Spain’s overall annual inflation rate stood at 4.3% in August, up from 3.6% in July, placing Catalonia slightly below the national average. The highest regional increases were recorded in Cantabria (5.1%), Galicia (4.8%) and Madrid, Castilla y León and Castilla-La Mancha (4.7%). The lowest were in the Canary Islands (3.8%) and La Rioja and Asturias (3.9%).

### Food and clothing show mixed trends

- Personal care: +3.1%
- Alcoholic drinks and tobacco: +1.8%
- Household goods: +1%
- Health: +0.9%
- Food and non-alcoholic beverages: +0.7%
- Education: +0.1%
- Clothing and footwear: -13.5%

The drop in clothing prices reflects ongoing promotional activity and remains the only major category to record a year-on-year decrease.
