# Catalonia Exceeds 138,000 Solar Self-Consumption Installations

Catalonia has exceeded 138,000 photovoltaic self-consumption installations, reaching a total installed capacity of 1,634.55 megawatts (MW). The Generalitat announced these figures recently, highlighting significant progress in the region's energy transition efforts.

Recent data from the Catalan Self-Consumption Observatory, part of the Catalan Energy Institute, shows substantial growth. The number of installations increased by 12% over the past year. Installed capacity rose by 18.3%. Domestic consumers account for 85.8% of these installations. Larger systems, however, contribute over a third of the total power.

Sílvia Paneque, the [Minister for Territory, Housing, and Ecological Transition](https://vertexaisearch.cloud.google/?ref=barna.news), commented on the progress. She stated, "These figures reflect Catalonia's commitment to energy transition." Minister Paneque also highlighted that more citizens and businesses now see generating their own energy as a profitable and responsible choice.

## Growing Adoption and Shared Energy

The average size of these installations has increased recently. Shared self-consumption also saw considerable growth, with a 32.8% rise in the number of systems. Its installed capacity grew by 64.2%. This trend allows multiple users to benefit from a single installation, often in apartment buildings or business parks.

## Barcelona Leads Regional Growth

Barcelona leads the region in the number of active installations, boasting over 81,000 systems. This makes the city a key driver in Catalonia's move towards renewable energy. Girona follows Barcelona, with Tarragona and Lleida also showing strong adoption rates. This regional distribution shows a widespread commitment across Catalonia.

The continued expansion of solar self-consumption is a critical step for Catalonia. It moves the region closer to its renewable energy targets. This ongoing commitment helps reduce reliance on traditional energy sources and promotes environmental sustainability for residents and businesses alike.
