- Description: Figures in Catalonia’s pro-independence movement are openly disputing whether Junts, ERC and smaller groups should work together or compete for support.

Calls for a united Catalan pro-independence strategy are losing ground, according to reporting by El Confidencial, as figures linked to the movement argue that competition between parties is preferable to another common platform.

For Catalan voters who support independence, the dispute concerns whether parties offer a coordinated electoral route or compete with separate programmes and candidates. The disagreement centres on Junts, ERC, the Catalan Republican Left, and the legacy of Junts pel Sí, the joint pro-independence ticket formed for the 2015 Catalan election.

The *procés*, the Catalan independence campaign that brought together political parties and civic groups, was associated with cooperation between Convergència i Unió, ERC, the Catalan National Assembly (ANC), Òmnium Cultural and the Association of Municipalities for Independence (AMI).

## Junts pel Sí fell short on its own in 2015

Junts pel Sí won 62 of the 135 seats in the Catalan Parliament in September 2015, according to contemporaneous results reported by [El País](https://english.elpais.com/elpais/2015/09/27/inenglish/1443389333%5F037404.html?ref=barna.news). An absolute majority required 68 seats.

The alliance therefore needed the support of the far-left pro-independence CUP, which was projected to win 10 seats. Together, the two pro-independence forces held 72 seats, the [BBC](https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-34372548?ref=barna.news) reported, although their combined vote share was below 50%.

## Costa argues against renewed coordination

Josep Costa, a former vice-president of the Catalan Parliament and former ally of Carles Puigdemont during Quim Torra’s presidency, told El Confidencial that the movement should stop treating unity as its central objective.

> “The discourse of unity is an expired commodity of the *procés*.”

Costa argued that rivalry, rather than trust between political leaders, drove the movement before 1 October. He said parties should compete to demonstrate which could pursue independence more effectively.

His comments target the leaders of Junts and ERC, including Puigdemont and ERC president Oriol Junqueras, at a time when El Confidencial reports that agreement between the two parties’ current leaderships appears unlikely.

## Valtònyc calls for a broader pro-independence coalition

Josep Miquel Arenas, the rapper known as Valtònyc, took a different position in an article published in August, while also describing the loss of trust between parties and supporters.

> “A social movement is not a birthday party. It is a room where many people enter who have not chosen each other.”

Valtònyc argued for a movement broad enough to include people with sharply different views. El Confidencial reported that this approach would extend to Aliança Catalana, a far-right pro-independence party.

Valtònyc previously told Belgian judicial police that he worked on web design for CatGlobal in Waterloo, an association linked to Puigdemont’s circle, according to El Confidencial’s 2020 report. The current debate leaves the movement divided between advocates of a broad alliance and those who want competing factions to determine its direction.
