## Parliament Acts to Safeguard School Trips

The Parliament of Catalonia has approved a motion calling on the Generalitat to take urgent action to protect school excursions and residential camps, known locally as 'colonies', following a wave of protest by teachers. On Thursday 22 October 2026, the plenary session passed a resolution demanding measures to guarantee these educational activities while addressing long-standing concerns over teacher pay and working conditions. The motion, initiated by the political party Junts, received broad support with 131 votes in favour. Parties backing the proposal include PSC-Unit, ERC, PP, Vox, Comuns, and Aliança Catalana. The CUP abstained from voting. The resolution explicitly calls for 'sufficient and proportional' compensation for teachers who take on additional responsibilities during trips, including overnight supervision and extended hours.

## Over 1,000 Schools Cancel Trips in Protest

The move comes amid growing unrest in the teaching community. More than 1,000 public primary and secondary schools across Catalonia have decided not to schedule educational trips or overnight stays for the current academic year. This collective action, organised through the platform 'Aturem les sortides educatives' (Let's Stop Educational Trips), highlights dissatisfaction with high student-teacher ratios, bureaucratic burdens, and lack of remuneration for the 24-hour responsibility teachers assume during colonies.

> The political message is unequivocal: excursions are fundamental to the holistic development of students and cannot be abandoned due to a lack of resources or labour dissatisfaction.

## Guaranteeing Equity and Classroom Conditions

The approved resolution also urges the government to ensure no student is excluded from excursions due to financial hardship. It calls for targeted financial aid for vulnerable families and support for students with special educational needs. Alongside the protection of leisure education, the Parliament unanimously backed a plan to improve air conditioning in schools. With increasingly extreme weather, lawmakers demand an audit of public school facilities and an 'ambitious and equitable' rollout of climate control systems, prioritised by technical criteria and agreed with local councils, without placing financial strain on municipalities. The full text of the motion, pending official publication in the Butlletí Oficial del Parlament de Catalunya, includes specific directives under the authority of the Departament d'Educació to implement these measures effectively.
