## Seventeen New Specialists to Join Outbreak Response

The Catalan government has approved a three-year programme to reinforce surveillance, control, and eradication efforts against African swine fever (ASF) in response to the ongoing outbreak. The initiative, announced on Tuesday 3rd November 2026, will run from 1st December 2026 to 30th November 2029 and is funded through the contingency fund.

## Targeted Hiring to Strengthen Field Operations

The programme will bring in seventeen new professionals: ten veterinarians, two environmental scientists, and five staff with management and administrative expertise. Recruitment will be conducted via the [ATRI portal](https://govern.cat/salapremsa/notes-premsa/887848/govern-aprova-programa-tres-anys-reforcar-vigilancia-control-ppa-protegir-sector-porci?ref=barna.news), in line with principles of merit, ability, transparency, and competition, according to the official announcement by the Generalitat.

> The programme will allow for the reinforcement of tasks such as the control of livestock farms, epidemiological surveillance, and actions on wild boar populations.

These roles aim to bolster frontline efforts including monitoring of pig farms, tracking the spread of the virus, and managing wild boar populations, which are key to containing the disease.

## Why Long-Term Action is Needed

ASF affects both domestic pigs and wild boar, and can persist in the environment, particularly in carcasses and pork products, for extended periods. The transmission dynamics among wildlife require sustained intervention over the medium term. Economic losses from ASF are significant. They include direct impacts such as animal deaths and reduced production, as well as indirect consequences like trade restrictions on livestock and pork products, which affect farmers and the wider public. The programme's goal is to protect Catalonia’s pig sector and prevent the disease from spreading beyond current restricted zones, where access controls and biosecurity measures are already in place.
