Currently, many towns lack such plans. Under this initiative, the Department of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Food will provide direct technical assistance alongside funding. The first phase includes allocating €2 million specifically for drafting local prevention strategies. Additionally, €75 million will be distributed over five years from 2026 to 2030, €15 million annually, to create fuel-break strips near urban areas and protect settlements. ## Integrated Action and Data Systems The protocol promotes sustainable forest management across public and private lands, simplifies administrative processes and improves safety in residential zones bordering forests. It also calls for an integrated real-time data system mapping water points, access roads and firebreaks. > We are addressing the entire cycle of fire prevention, from forest management to coordination between administrations and actions for extinction and recovery. Lluïsa Moret, president of the Barcelona Provincial Council, welcomed the collaboration, emphasising its comprehensive approach. Miquel Noguer, head of Girona’s council, stressed the need for orderly planning and inclusive local involvement, saying the tool aims to “avoid the wound” caused by wildfires. --- ## Tripled Forest Management Efforts As part of the strategy, the Generalitat intends to triple its annual forest management area. This structural policy shift targets both publicly owned woodlands and privately held forests where public intervention is feasible. The move follows recent fires, including one in Os de Balaguer that burned around 16 hectares of mostly forested land earlier this year.
