The premises of the former ONA Gràcia bookshop at Gran de Gràcia 217 have been transformed into a supermarket, marking another shift in Barcelona’s evolving retail landscape. The bookshop, opened in 2013 by Montserrat Úbeda, closed permanently one year ago. Workers are now finalising preparations for the opening of Supermercat Suhel, with the new signage already installed on the façade.

According to sources from the Gràcia District, no official 'communication of change of activity' has yet been registered for the premises. The weekly newspaper *L’Independent de Gràcia* reported earlier that the space had been cleared and put up for rent six months ago at a price of 1,500 euros per month.

## No 24-Hour Licence Permitted

The new supermarket will not operate 24 hours, in line with local regulations. The Gràcia District confirmed that time restrictions are in place, and the signage does not advertise extended hours. Since 20 May 2026, the Barcelona City Council has suspended the approval of new licences for 24-hour supermarkets for a period of one year, including building permits for both new establishments and expansions.

As of 2024, there were approximately 1,300 24-hour supermarkets operating across the city, according to council data. The temporary moratorium forms part of broader efforts to manage urban life and commercial activity, particularly in residential neighbourhoods.

## Retail Trends in Barcelona

The conversion reflects wider trends in the city’s ground-floor commercial spaces. A 2024 report by the Barcelona Commerce, Restoration and Food Directorate found 61,875 active ground-floor businesses citywide, of which 2,594 are supermarkets or self-service stores, a 3% increase since 2022.

Meanwhile, clothing shops, bakeries, and IT services have also seen growth, while fruit and vegetable stores and butchers have declined. > The change at Gran de Gràcia 217 is not isolated, it’s part of a city-wide transformation where traditional independent shops are being replaced by convenience-focused retail.

The building at Gran de Gràcia 217 dates from 1900 and retains architectural heritage features, including a ceramic mosaic in the entrance hall, documented by the city’s participatory inventory [El mosaic del meu barri](https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/arqueologiabarcelona/mosaics/mosaic/carrer-gran-de-gracia-217/?ref=barna.news).
