The sign of Bodega Carol in El Clot has been temporarily saved after the establishment's owners and Barcelona City Council agreed to suspend legal proceedings over its removal. The sign, which protrudes a few centimetres beyond municipal limits, had been at risk under current urban landscape regulations.

On Wednesday 21st October 2026, both parties requested the suspension of the administrative enforcement action, allowing time for a legislative solution. Municipal sources confirmed to *La Vanguardia* that the council is now developing a new regulatory proposal to protect signs of commercial establishments with historical or heritage significance.

This initiative will involve collaboration with the commercial sector and will be presented to the reactivated Joint Advisory Commission for Urban Landscape. The aim is to align municipal protection measures for both business activities and the visual character of unique city establishments.

However, a reform of the municipal Urban Landscape Ordinance cannot be completed within the current term of office, despite broad political consensus. For now, the agreement halts enforcement and preserves the sign while work on the new framework progresses.

## Precedent in Barceloneta

The case echoes recent events at Bar Fermín in Barceloneta, where residents protested the removal of a historic sign that had stood since the 1970s. That sign was taken down in compliance with regulations and is currently stored in the back room of a nearby greengrocer’s shop.

The loss of the Bar Fermín sign sparked local outcry, with many in the neighbourhood expressing a sense of cultural erasure. The episode has since informed the city’s approach to preserving similar heritage features in commercial spaces.

## Support for Heritage Businesses

This effort aligns with existing city subsidies for the protection and improvement of urban landscape, including support for iconic businesses. Under a current call open until 16th November 2026, the Municipal Institute for Urban Landscape (IMPU) is offering up to €3.2 million in funding over several years for façade renovations, green rooftops, and improvements to party walls visible from public space ([Barcelona City Council](https://www.barcelona.cat/infobarcelona/en/tema/urban-planning-and-infrastructures/subsidies-for-the-protection-and-improvement-of-urban-landscape%5F1604634.html?ref=barna.news)).

While the Bodega Carol sign remains in place, the city’s longer-term goal is to create a legal pathway for preserving such landmarks without compromising urban planning standards.
