## Partial Reopening After Historic Flood

The left bank of the Besòs river park reopened at 2:00 PM on Friday, 9 October 2026, following a week-long closure caused by one of the most intense floods recorded in the river this century. The Barcelona Provincial Council, which manages the park, removed access barriers and confirmed that initial recovery work has progressed faster than expected, allowing an earlier reopening than the originally planned Saturday date. On 4 October, the river surged from less than three cubic metres per second to 936 cubic metres per second within 24 hours, reaching a height of 3.6 metres, nearly overflowing its retaining wall. The surge flooded streets in Santa Coloma de Gramenet and Sant Adrià, according to real-time data from the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) \[S1\]. The flood completely submerged the park, washing up large amounts of reeds and debris along the banks.

## Access Still Limited

For now, only the left bank is open to the public, the section on the Santa Coloma, Badalona and Tres Xemeneies side, including pedestrian and cycle paths used by residents of Sant Adrià. The right bank, facing Barcelona and the La Catalana neighbourhood in Sant Adrià, remains closed. The Provincial Council said clearance operations will begin there once the accessible side is fully operational, but no opening date has been set. Residents are advised to remain cautious. While regular monitoring systems are active, including 24 water-level sensors (limnímetres), 45 rain gauges, and 38 warning panels across the park \[S1\], some areas still show visible signs of flood damage.

## Cleaning Under Rodalies Bridge Still Pending

A significant accumulation of vegetation and debris remains trapped under the railway viaduct where the Rodalies R1 line crosses the river. This area falls under the jurisdiction of Adif, Spain’s rail infrastructure manager, and the Catalan Water Agency, not the Provincial Council. Adif confirmed it is in the planning phase for a coordinated cleanup operation with relevant authorities. In a statement, the operator said it will “carry out cleaning and removal of materials under the viaduct's pillars and debris from the railway platform that has detached due to the rainstorm,” aiming to “preserve the safety of the structure and ensure the continuity of railway operations” \[S2\].

> “We have contacted the ACA so that, in a coordinated manner between the competent administrations, cleaning tasks are carried out under the railway viaduct over the Besòs River, once the alert level has been lowered.”

## Safety Concerns Raised by Sant Adrià

The Sant Adrià City Council has formally requested a meeting with Adif to review the structural resilience of the viaduct. Officials have raised concerns that its low clearance could pose a risk during future heavy rains, as accumulated vegetation might block water flow and increase pressure, potentially causing overflow into nearby residential zones. Adif stated it will respond through official channels. No immediate inspection date has been announced.
