## Rainfall Breaks Historical Records

The city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area experienced the rainiest day in at least the last 100 years on Saturday, according to data from the Servei Meteorològic de Catalunya (Meteocat), Catalonia's regional meteorological service. Between Saturday afternoon and midnight, rainfall accumulations ranged from 100 to 200 litres per square metre across the Barcelonès region. In some areas of central Barcelona, including Raval, totals reached up to 202 litres per square metre by Sunday morning, surpassing the previous record of 195 litres. This figure could rise further once early Sunday morning precipitation is included in the final tally.

> The accumulation of rain will be exceptional in terms of quantity and extent.

## Neighbourhood Data Confirms Extremes

Specific measurements show 190.8 litres per square metre fell in the Raval neighbourhood, where 36.1 litres descended in just half an hour and 3.4 litres in one minute. This intensity nearly doubles the 95.4 litres recorded during the severe storm of 24 March 2017\. Other locations include:

- 170.3 litres per square metre in the University Zone along Avinguda Diagonal, the highest in 18 years
- 152 litres near the Badalona Museum, the most since 2005, or 21 years

## Storm System Still Active

The extreme weather was caused by a convective mesoscale system (SCM) forming over the western Mediterranean, prompting emergency alerts across the Catalan coast. Rain bands were slowly moving northward through Catalonia on Sunday morning, shifting westward. Meteocat warned residents via social media that "we still have hours" of rain ahead, with widespread and intense accumulations expected in northern coastal areas. Long-term historical comparisons are supported by Meteocat's climatic series dataset, CADTEP, which provides continuous daily precipitation records since 1950 ([meteo.cat](https://www.meteo.cat/wpweb/climatologia/dades-i-productes-climatics/series-climatiques-des-de-1950/?ref=barna.news)). For context, the catastrophic Sant Miquel floods of September 1913, previously among the most extreme events on record, peaked at 262 mm in St Feliu del Llobregat and 202.6 mm in Lladó ([meteo.cat](https://www.meteo.cat/wpweb/divulgacio/publicacions/efemerides/1913-09-29%5F100-anys-de-laiguat-de-sant-miquel/?ref=barna.news)). Saturday’s event matches or exceeds those levels in central urban zones.
