Barcelona’s Enric Sagnier, master architect of Eixample, remembered

Enric Sagnier Villavechia (1858-1931) was a prominent Catalan architect known for his work in Barcelona’s Eixample district.

Over his 50-year career, he designed around 500 buildings, including iconic structures like the Duana, Palau de Justicia, and Sagrat Cor temple. Sagnier’s eclectic style incorporated medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, classical, and modernist influences, earning him recognition for his quality and innovation. Despite creating 59 buildings listed in Barcelona’s architectural heritage catalog, some of his works, such as the Hotel Colon, have been lost over time. Sagnier’s legacy raises questions about the recognition of architects who defy categorization and the preservation of architectural heritage in urban environments.
