## Climate Pressures Drive Grid Modernisation

Barcelona’s electricity grid is undergoing a major transformation to withstand the increasing impacts of climate change, as extreme heat and torrential rain become more frequent. In July 2026, Catalonia experienced its hottest month on record, with Barcelona enduring 26 days of heatwaves. This surge in temperature drove electricity demand to 8,119 megawatts, primarily in the city and its metropolitan area, due to widespread air conditioning use. October 2026 has already seen two intense episodes of torrential rain, causing over 4,000 incidents across Catalonia and requiring the deployment of around 500 Endesa workers. These extreme weather events place significant strain on the city’s 7,870 km electrical network, a length equivalent to more than thirteen times the road distance between Barcelona and Madrid.

## Underground and Interconnected Network

The vast majority of Barcelona’s grid, 93.5%, runs underground, serving over 955,006 customers including homes, businesses and public services. While this reduces exposure to wind, falling trees and debris, it presents unique challenges during flooding, as faults are not visible and often require pavement excavation for access. The network includes 6,744 electrical installations, such as 5,744 transformer substations and 42 distribution centres. These substations adjust voltage levels to ensure safe and efficient electricity distribution across different neighbourhoods.

## Mesh Configuration Enhances Resilience

A key strength of the grid is its mesh configuration, allowing multiple routes for electricity to reach the same destination. This design enables operators to isolate faulty sections and reroute power where technically feasible, minimising outages during disruptions. "This does not mean that all faults can be avoided or that the installations are immune to storms. But the system is better prepared to withstand the impact, contain the consequences, and restore service quickly," Endesa stated.

## Digital Monitoring Cuts Response Time

Digitisation is central to the grid’s adaptation. Remote sensors and control systems allow Endesa to detect and manage faults without always dispatching engineers. Since 2020, sensorised installations have grown from 887 (13%) to a projected 5,628 (83%) by the end of 2026\. Remote control capabilities are also expanding, rising from 1,883 installations (27%) in 2020 to an expected 2,867 (42%) by year-end. According to Endesa, these digital systems reduce customer disconnection times by up to 20% during incidents.

## €62 Million Investment in 2026

Endesa plans to invest €62.37 million in Barcelona this year to modernise the grid. The programme includes 248 infrastructure interventions, the installation of over 41 km of new power lines, and upgrades to 502 transformer substations. A key goal is to expand remote control to 2,867 installations, enhancing operational agility and resilience.
