## First New Tank in 15 Years to Enter Service by 2028

Barcelona will open its first new stormwater retention tank in 15 years by the end of 2028, with the Prim tank in the Sant Martí district set to become operational. The 100,000-cubic-metre underground reservoir, located beneath Rambla Prim near Via Trajana, will help prevent street flooding during torrential downpours. Currently, the city relies on 15 existing storm tanks with a combined capacity of 447,000 cubic metres of rainwater. These infrastructures played a critical role during heavy rainfall episodes in late September and early October 2026, when they filled and emptied two and a half times within 48 hours.

> The storm drains allowed the city to hold on.

, Laia Bonet, First Deputy Mayor of Barcelona

## Four More Tanks in Development

The Prim tank is the most advanced of four new stormwater reservoirs currently in development. The city is also advancing plans for tanks at Sagrera, Vallcarca, and Bac de Roda. The Vallcarca tank is in the design phase, with work expected to conclude in early 2027\. Bac de Roda will begin preliminary design in November 2026, while Carrer Motors tank in Zona Franca remains in the study stage. The municipal government has committed €200 million during this term to expand the network, with land already reserved underground for 29 additional future tanks. This expansion aims to increase the city’s rainwater retention capacity by over one million cubic metres.

### How the System Works

During intense rainfall, Barcelona’s sewer system fills rapidly. To prevent overflow and surface flooding, excess water is diverted into storm tanks. These underground reservoirs hold the water until the rain subsides, after which it is gradually released back into the drainage network via gates and pumping stations. Some water is sent to treatment plants, while cleaner flows may be discharged safely into the sea. The existing system prevented widespread urban flooding during the October storms, though transport disruptions and road closures still occurred.

## €26 Million Allocated for Storm Repairs

The city estimates that reversing damage from the rainfall events of 16 and 29 September, and 3 to 5 October 2026, will cost €26 million. Of this, €20 million will address 104 recorded incidents, including urgent repairs in the Canyelles area. An additional €4 million will secure two torrents, one at Font del Gos and another near Ronda de Dalt, while €2 million is allocated to cleaning tasks such as mud removal.

> It’s a historic investment record.

, Jaume Collboni, Mayor of Barcelona The storm tanks are part of a broader climate resilience strategy. The city’s sewer network spans 1,985 km, with 22 km currently being upgraded under the Pla Endreça, a €40.6 million rehabilitation project involving 13 km of renewal and 9 km of new construction. What this means for you: Residents in flood-prone areas, particularly in Sant Martí and Horta-Guinardó, can expect improved drainage resilience as new tanks come online.
