The initiative, confirmed by the Consell Econòmic i Social de Barcelona, forms part of the city’s Climate Plan and Bike Agenda 2026–2027 to reduce emissions and expand sustainable transport options. The subsidies will cover up to 40% of the purchase price, excluding VAT, and are available to individuals registered as Barcelona residents and companies with offices in the city. Although the first official call will be published in 2027, purchases made from 1 December 2026 will be eligible once the regulatory terms are approved. ## €4 Million Allocated Over Four Years The city plans to allocate €4 million between 2027 and 2030 to fund the scheme. The goal is to lower financial barriers to e-bike ownership, particularly for low-income groups, while supporting the renewal of the city’s cycling fleet and progress toward climate neutrality. This effort complements ongoing infrastructure upgrades, including improvements along Avinguda Meridiana and Avinguda Diagonal, and the expansion of the cycling network. According to the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the city already has 268 kilometres of bike lanes, with 12.4 km of new lanes and 9.4 km of improvements planned or underway. ## Network Expansion and Fleet Growth Among the key projects is a 6.6 km two-way lane on Montjuïc, connecting major cultural and green spaces such as the Fundació Joan Miró and the Jardins de Laribal. Work is also progressing on Via Laietana, Badajoz Street, and sections of Diagonal, where pavement lanes will be moved to the road surface for safety and efficiency. The Bicing public bike system has expanded by nearly 1,000 bikes, reaching 8,000 units, with a growing number of electric models. This aligns with broader efforts to make cycling accessible for longer commutes and hilly areas. > The subsidies aim to make sustainable mobility accessible to groups with fewer resources.
