## Global Experts to Gather in Barcelona

On Thursday 22nd October 2026, Barcelona will open the first Gaudí International Congress 2026 at the Auditori de La Pedrera – Casa Milà, a four-day academic event bringing together researchers, professionals, and scholars from Europe, Asia, and the Americas to examine the legacy of architect Antoni Gaudí. The congress, occurring as part of Gaudí Year – the centenary commemoration of Gaudí's death (1852–1926) – is the first scientific disciplinary gathering focused exclusively on his work. Organised by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya - BarcelonaTech (UPC), the Generalitat de Catalunya, and the Fundació Catalunya La Pedrera, with support from the Consell Antoni Gaudí, the event aims to establish a lasting international research network centred on Gaudí’s architectural, technical, and cultural contributions.

## Unpublished Research and Rigorous Review Process

The congress will feature 39 scientific papers, all previously unpublished, presented by emerging and established researchers. Submissions underwent a double-blind peer review process to ensure academic rigour. Around 29% of contributors are based outside Spain, reflecting the event’s international scope. Research spans disciplines including architectural geometry, documentary analysis, conservation techniques, landscape studies, symbolism, music, education, and the global reception of Gaudí’s work. Notable presentations include a study of ten drawings attributed to the young Gaudí, an analysis of vegetal ornamentation in Palau Güell by Fàtima López Pérez, and Georgios Magkanas’s iconographic reconstruction of a lost mural in La Pedrera.

## Thematic Structure and Key Speakers

The programme is structured around three thematic blocks:

- **Project, Technique, and Conservation** – focusing on structural and material aspects of Gaudí’s architecture
- **History, Theory, and Documentation** – exploring historical context and archival research
- **Communication, Values, and Contemporary Projection** – examining Gaudí’s symbolic and modern-day relevance

Each day aligns with a theme: Thursday 22nd October begins with institutional addresses by Sònia Hernández, Minister of Culture of the Generalitat de Catalunya, and Galdric Santana, commissioner of Gaudí Year and professor at ETSAB-UPC. Friday 23rd October focuses on historical and documentary research, Saturday 24th October on communication and contemporary impact, and Sunday 25th October on conclusions. Keynote speakers include Rosa M. Alsina-Pagès (La Salle–URL), M. Mercè Compte i Barceló (University of Barcelona), Miquel Domènech Roig (researcher on 'Gardens in Gaudí's Work'), and Albert Samper Sosa (URV).

## A Lasting Academic Legacy

Galdric Santana stated:

> Beyond the event itself, one of the great achievements and legacies of this edition is the establishment of a scientific committee with unprecedented cohesion and breadth, formed by top-level experts who have consolidated as a true future advisory board to create a stable international research and talent attraction network around the architect.

The congress is designed to be recurring, with plans to hold it every three years. Scientific output will continue beyond 2026, with proceedings published by UPC and a selection of papers to be released in an indexed volume by Springer.

## Gaudí Year: A Unified Commemoration

The congress is a flagship event of Gaudí Year, an official commemoration by the Generalitat de Catalunya marking the centenary of Gaudí’s death. The Department of Culture has allocated 6.5 million euros to the initiative. The commemoration has also been declared an Event of Special Public Interest (EEIP) by Spain’s Ministry of Culture, enabling tax incentives for private sponsorship. All 14 of Gaudí’s works in Catalonia are collaborating under the Consell Antoni Gaudí, an advisory body established in 2014\. For the first time, the four Gaudí sites outside Catalonia – El Capricho in Comillas, the Cathedral of Mallorca, the Episcopal Palace of Astorga, and Casa Botines – are also participating in a coordinated tribute.
