## Cleaning operation scaled up citywide

The Barcelona City Council will double its daily cleaning workforce starting tomorrow, Thursday 8 October, to accelerate recovery from last weekend’s severe storms. Deputy Mayor Laia Bonet announced the move in an interview on betevé’s "bàsics" programme, stating that teams are already working in areas previously inaccessible due to rain.

> Today we have been working in areas where we couldn't work in recent days due to the rain, especially in the mountain neighbourhoods. Tomorrow, these teams will accelerate their work even further.

The additional crews form part of the ongoing [Pla Endreça](https://www.barcelona.cat/infobarcelona/en/more-cleaning-teams-to-strengthen-the-care-of-public-space%5F1602170.html?ref=barna.news), which has already increased the average daily cleaning staff to nearly 2,000 across the city in 2026\. The current reinforcement prioritises districts affected by landslides and flooding, including Gràcia and Horta-Guinardó.

## 14 schools protected with flood barriers

Bonet confirmed that protective fences have been installed at 14 educational centres across the city to prevent water ingress after heavy rainfall. These include nurseries and primary schools identified as being at risk during the storm episode. Earlier assessments by the council reviewed all 330+ public education facilities; while some outside Barcelona remained closed, all municipal schools within the city resumed normal operations on Monday.

### Drainage systems under review

The deputy mayor acknowledged that the drainage infrastructure on the city’s ring roads functioned overall but was overwhelmed at specific points where runoff from surrounding areas concentrated. Engineers and city technicians are now identifying these critical zones to plan both immediate repairs and long-term upgrades.

This follows activation of the Municipal Emergency Action Plan for Flood Risk, which has since been downgraded to alert level. The Basic Municipal Action Plan remains active as services return to normal, according to [Info Barcelona](https://www.barcelona.cat/infobarcelona/en/tema/security-and-prevention/severe-weather-city-gradually-returning-to-normal%5F41745.html?ref=barna.news).
