Historic Can Cuiàs aqueduct will soon feature a new pedestrian walkway, reconnecting Barcelona and Montcada.

The 19th-century structure is set for a major transformation, with work beginning shortly on a €2.08 million project to install a safe crossing for residents.

## Historic Can Cuiàs Aqueduct Project Details

Barcelona City Council has announced that construction will start imminently on the five-month scheme.

The project involves installing a lightweight metallic structure supported by the aqueduct itself. Furthermore, the walkway will feature exterior-grade, anti-slip wooden decking for safety.

The initiative represents a significant community victory. Consequently, Nou Barris councillor Xavier Marcé described it as a “historic demand from local residents”. For years, people have requested a secure and dignified connection between the neighbourhoods.

Additionally, the project includes comprehensive rehabilitation of the aqueduct, which is listed as a local cultural heritage site. New lighting and seating areas will also be incorporated, transforming the space. The structure itself measures 106.4 metres long with six semi-circular arches, reaching a maximum height of over 16 metres.

This development follows other significant transport and connectivity improvements in the region. For instance, [recent plans for a Diagonal tram extension](https://barna.news/barcelona-to-vote-on-diagonal-tram-connection-to-francesc-macia-on-21-october/) demonstrate the city’s ongoing commitment to enhancing mobility. Meanwhile, the approved works are currently in a public consultation phase before final implementation.

The restoration of the historic Can Cuiàs aqueduct walkway addresses a long-standing gap in local infrastructure. Therefore, it will provide a vital link between Ciutat Meridiana in Barcelona and Can Cuiàs in Montcada i Reixac. The council’s commitment reflects broader efforts to improve inter-municipal connections and pedestrian safety across the metropolitan area.
