## Restoration Begins on 1858 Railway Workshop Facades

This week, Barcelona city council launched restoration works on the seven historic facades of the former Renfe railway workshops in Parc del Clot, located in the Sant Martí district. The structures, dating from 1858, were integrated into the park in 1986 and are now undergoing urgent repair due to visible deterioration. The project is part of the city’s broader Pla Endreça initiative to rehabilitate key historical infrastructure. According to the council, the €1.9 million allocated for this phase will cover deep cleaning, removal of embedded rust and vegetation, and the repair of cracks using resin injection.

## Targeted Repairs and Replacement of Damaged Elements

Where structural damage is severe, broken architectural elements will be removed and replaced with replicas to preserve the original aesthetic. The work is expected to last five months, beginning in summer 2026\. This intervention follows years of local residents’ appeals for preservation, as the facades had developed partial detachments and persistent vegetation growth threatening their integrity.

## City-Wide Historic Infrastructure Investment

The Clot facade project is one of three major heritage restorations funded under the city’s €9.3 million urban renewal programme. The others include the Marina Bridge in Fort Pienc (€6 million) and the Vallcarca viaduct (€1.4 million), both also undergoing rehabilitation this year. Laia Bonet, Barcelona’s first deputy mayor, described the investment as "very important" for safeguarding the city’s industrial heritage while improving public spaces.

> These historic facades are a key part of Clot’s identity, and their restoration ensures they remain safe and dignified for future generations.

The full plan is coordinated through the [Barcelona City Council’s official Pla Endreça framework](https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/premsa/2026/09/06/comenca-la-rehabilitacio-de-les-facanes-dels-antics-tallers-de-renfe-del-parc-del-clot-en-el-marc-del-pla-endreca/?ref=barna.news), which prioritises conservation of architectural landmarks across the city.
