Barcelona’s most visited landmarks are being reshaped by influencer culture, as Instagram and TikTok content steers millions of tourists toward the same attractions and homogenised dining spots. According to the 2024 Profile and Habits of Tourists in Barcelona survey, conducted by the Observatori del Turisme a Barcelona with 3,990 interviews, 80.9% of visitors went to La Rambla, 80.0% to Plaça Catalunya and Passeig de Gràcia, and 77.9% to the Sagrada Família, sites frequently highlighted in influencer content.

This digital-driven tourism boom coincides with a noticeable shift in the city’s food scene. Over half of tourists reported visiting bars or coffee shops during their stay, according to the observatory report. However, many of these venues, promoted heavily by influencers, offer nearly identical menus seen in other global cities: avocado toast, matcha lattes, and minimalist interiors. Researchers Pascale Joassart-Marcelli and Fernando J. Bosco describe this phenomenon as “foodification,” where neighbourhoods like Barceloneta see traditional markets and eateries rebranded for tourist appeal, particularly along the Joan de Borbó promenade.

## Tourism Management Adapts to Crowding

The Barcelona City Council has responded by launching a new governance model focused on 16 designated Crowded Spaces (EGAs), areas experiencing high footfall from both residents and visitors. Half of these EGAs, including Park Güell, La Boqueria–La Gardunya, and Barri Gòtic, are classified as predominantly tourist-heavy. The EGA Plan prioritises three zones for immediate action: Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and the area between La Boqueria Market and Plaça de La Gardunya.

This initiative includes 33 specific actions and a minimum investment of €44.2 million to manage [public space](https://barna.news/report-barcelona-plans-660-public-space-cameras/) saturation and protect community life. The council aims to ensure tourism remains sustainable while preserving residents’ access to daily activities, especially in areas where commercial offerings increasingly cater to short-term visitors rather than locals.

## Influencers Drive Spending, Alter Local Identity

While influencers like Gabriele Pletaite and Lidia Izquierdo help promote Barcelona globally, their content often reflects a lifestyle out of reach for most residents. Paid collaborations with restaurants and cafés are now standard income sources, meaning recommendations may prioritise aesthetics and branding over authenticity. Pletaite has since limited her café partnerships, noting that trendy brunch spots cost far more than traditional local eateries.

> The cost of trendy brunches far exceeds that of traditional local cafés, raising concerns about the changing character of Barcelona’s neighborhoods.

Tourist spending reflects this trend. In 2024, the average expense per visitor reached €1,175.27, a 7.3% increase from 2023, according to the Observatori del Turisme a Barcelona. While 62.5% of tourists dined at Spanish cuisine restaurants and 40.7% at Catalan ones, the visibility of niche, Instagrammable venues continues to grow.

The city’s transformation mirrors broader European patterns, but the speed and scale in Barcelona are notable. As social media redefines what is considered ‘authentic,’ the challenge lies in balancing international appeal with the preservation of local urban life. The EGA Plan represents one step toward managing that balance, but the influence of digital trends remains powerful and largely unregulated.
