## Two Major Acquisitions Presented Today

The Egyptian Museum of Barcelona has unveiled two significant new acquisitions: a complete funerary ensemble from the 26th Dynasty (664–525 BC) belonging to a noblewoman named Iah-tes-najt, meaning 'The Moon is her strength', and a sandstone relief fragment depicting Pharaoh Akhenaten and Queen Nefertiti making offerings to the god Aten during the Amarna period (1353–1335 BC). The funerary set, comprising a rectangular outer sarcophagus and an anthropoid inner coffin, is the only such complete ensemble of its kind in Spain. It was acquired by hotel entrepreneur and museum founder Jordi Clos from the private collection of Belgian Egyptology collector Jean-Jacques Rotthier (1932–2009), through a Paris auction last summer. The pieces were formally presented on Tuesday 6 October 2026, during a press visit at the museum’s location on Carrer de València 294.

## Iconography and Restoration

The sarcophagus and coffin contain rich iconographic and textual elements, including depictions of up to 20 deities. One striking image is of Nut, the sky goddess, shown semi-naked in what experts describe as a loincloth or tanga, an unusual representation thought to reflect provincial rather than official workshop styles. A mirror has been installed inside the display so visitors can view the ceiling painting of Nut on the sarcophagus lid. Mariàngela Taulé, director of the museum, described the acquisition as a 'very important contribution' that adds to the representation of women in the collection. The ensemble will be displayed in the section dedicated to female figures. The second acquisition, the Amarna-period relief, shows Akhenaten and Nefertiti under the rays of the Aten sun disc. It is the only known example of a joint royal representation from this era held in a Spanish state collection. Both pieces required significant restoration before going on display.

> "These are two unique pieces and we are extremely proud to have acquired them,"

said Clos, who also noted that only institutions like the Louvre, the Museo Egipizio in Turin or the Metropolitan Museum of Art hold comparable funerary sets.

### Permanent Display and Context

Both items are now part of the museum’s permanent exhibition, which includes over 1,350 artefacts and has been established over three decades as one of Europe’s most important private Egyptological collections. The Amarna relief will be exhibited in the pharaohs section, complementing existing displays on religious and political transformations in ancient Egypt. This unveiling follows a previous presentation in May 2026, when the museum revealed other acquisitions from European collections, including the limestone sarcophagus of Padiefty and several Late Period scarabs from the Jean and Michèle Yoyotte collection, as well as wall reliefs and paintings from the Musée d’Art Classique de Mougins.
