Police in Barcelona are on high alert for a possible new wave of youth-led violence this Saturday 31 October 2026, following a surge of unrest last weekend that led to 133 arrests and widespread vandalism.

Interior Minister of the Generalitat Núria Parlon issued the warning on Wednesday 28 October during a session of the Interior Commission in the Catalan Parliament. She was joined by Ferran López, Director General of the Mossos d'Esquadra, and Chief Commissioner Sílvia Catà, who detailed the scale of last Saturday’s disturbances in central Barcelona.

Of the 133 people arrested, 85 were minors, according to the Mossos. Shops were looted and urban furniture vandalised during what authorities describe as a disorganised but highly destructive episode. Parlon attributed the violence to a 'new phenomenon' of youth criminality masked as student protests over education standards.

Authorities are particularly concerned about online mobilisation through encrypted messaging platforms. Two Telegram channels promoting new disturbances on 31 October have already been shut down, and a second group, BLOCUS-BCN2, with over 2,000 members, was blocked on Tuesday 27 October.

The Mossos have now enlisted the support of the Centre for Intelligence against Terrorism and Organised Crime (CITCO), marking the first time the force has used this channel to target groups inciting public disorder via digital platforms. The request was made through the National Unit for the Removal of Illegal Online Content (UNECI), which specialises in removing extremist and terrorist content.

> "We are not facing a widespread threat to public safety or an extensive phenomenon among young people," said Chief Commissioner Catà, seeking to reassure the public.

Despite the reassurance, Parlon confirmed that the investigation remains open, with 300 identifications from last weekend’s events under review. She also thanked the Public Prosecutor’s Office for Children and Adolescents for fast-tracking measures, including six closed-regime internments and other precautionary actions for underage detainees.

## Online networks under scrutiny

Authorities say the mobilisation began with a call on TikTok using disguised identities, which directed users via QR code to Telegram and WhatsApp groups. These groups instructed participants to wear black, cover their faces, and bring pyrotechnics.

"No one should confuse the anonymity of the networks with impunity," stressed Catà. López added that while the organisers of the 'Blocus' network remain unidentified, police are confident they will be exposed.

The Generalitat has formally requested that WhatsApp, Telegram, and TikTok close down groups linked to the 'Blocus' movement and assist in identifying the individuals behind false profiles.

## Police response and deployment

López acknowledged that while police had deployed over 30 public order units near Plaça Catalunya and had prior arrangements at the CECOR on Carrer Lleida, they did not anticipate the level of violence, which he described as purposeless destruction.

He noted that 74.2% of those arrested had no prior criminal record, and the average age was 19\. Of the detainees, 64.8% were Spanish nationals, 32% foreign, and 3.1% had no data recorded.

Authorities are monitoring social media closely, having detected similar calls in Granollers and Girona. A previous alert on Monday 26 October prompted a major police presence around Plaça Espanya after a call for gatherings circulated online.
