**In brief:** Appointments for an NIE, TIE fingerprints and Cl@ve are made through free official websites, so paying anyone simply to secure a slot is never necessary. To get a TIE, use the state Cita Previa Extranjería portal to book a "toma de huellas" slot and select any office in Barcelona province, not just those in the city. Generate your Tasa 790 código 012 form today on the Policía Nacional site, so it is ready to pay before the appointment.

*Last checked 28th October 2026: booking steps, procedure names, the fee form and Cl@ve registration routes checked against the Policía Nacional fee site, the Cl@ve portal, the Ajuntament's 010 page and the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona's official booking instructions.*

## What people in Barcelona ask

These are the questions members of a Barcelona English-speakers community of 3,000+ people raise most often.

- When do fresh TIE fingerprint and NIE appointments become available, and how long will I have to wait?
- Should I pay an agency or gestor to secure a slot, and what can I do if they go silent?
- How do I sign up for Cl@ve, and can it be done without going to an office?
- How does Cl@ve differ from an FNMT digital certificate and from idCAT?
- What must I pay for and print out ahead of the police fingerprint appointment?

## Which appointment do you actually need?

"NIE appointment" is a loose term covering a number of distinct procedures, and choosing the wrong one is the most frequent way to squander a slot. Make sure the appointment you book corresponds to the precise next step set out in the letter or resolution you have been given.

- **First TIE card, or a renewal requiring fingerprints:** this is the police procedure listed as "POLICIA – TOMA DE HUELLAS (EXPEDICIÓN DE TARJETA) Y RENOVACIÓN DE TARJETA DE LARGA DURACIÓN". Wording on the menu may vary a little, so look out for "toma de huellas" and "expedición de tarjeta".
- **Picking up the completed card:** this is handled under a different procedure, "POLICIA – RECOGIDA DE TARJETA DE IDENTIDAD DE EXTRANJERO (TIE)", at the police station shown on the receipt handed to you at your fingerprint appointment.
- **Cl@ve:** this is not an immigration appointment in any sense. Consult the Cl@ve section below; the majority of people can now sign up online.

## How to book a TIE fingerprint appointment yourself

1. Go to the official [Cita Previa Extranjería portal](https://sede.administracionespublicas.gob.es/icpplus/index.html?ref=barna.news) and pick the province of Barcelona.
2. Select "cualquier oficina" (any office), which displays every slot open across the province. Booking in your own town is not required: Terrassa, Sabadell and Cerdanyola del Vallès are all valid.
3. Pick the "toma de huellas (expedición de tarjeta)" procedure and click "Aceptar".
4. If you have no digital certificate, choose "Presentación sin Cl@ve", then key in your NIE and full name exactly as they appear on your documents.
5. Provide a Spanish mobile number (a confirmation code is sent by text) and your email address.
6. Choose a day and time on the calendar, type in the text code to confirm, and save the receipt that arrives by email.
7. Create your fee form on the [Tasa modelo 790 código 012 site](https://sede.policia.gob.es/Tasa790%5F012/?ref=barna.news), pay it ahead of the appointment, and retain the stamped or paid copy.

## When new slots appear

Since no official release schedule is published, any suggestion that appointments always become available on a given day or at a set hour should be treated as rumour. The official guidance is more helpful: search across the whole province and book as early as possible, as slots are taken quickly. Checking several times daily over a week, and being willing to accept an office a train ride away, delivers for free what resellers charge for.

The charge itself is not reproduced here, since the official website calculates it individually for each procedure and amounts taken from screenshots or external sites quickly become outdated.

## What goes wrong

- **Buying a place in the queue.** Agencies and gestores are entitled by law to bill for their time, but the appointment as such costs nothing. Should a company take your money purely to "secure an appointment" and then vanish, you can pursue a card chargeback, lodge a consumer complaint, and start the process over yourself. Before handing over any money, establish precisely what the service covers, whether a refund follows if no slot materialises, and whether the booking confirmation will be made out in your own name.
- **Booking the wrong service.** A general certificate or information appointment is not the same as a fingerprint slot. If the procedure does not correspond to your paperwork, staff may refuse to see you.
- **Unpaid fee.** Come with the Tasa 790 código 012 already settled. Do not rely on being able to pay at the police station.
- **Documents left behind.** Carry the booking receipt, your passport, the resolution or approval letter for your residence, and everything on your procedure's document list. Go through that list line by line the evening before.

## Cl@ve, FNMT certificate and idCAT, explained simply

**Cl@ve** is the Spanish state's login system. As the Cl@ve portal sets out, registration can now be done in several ways: online via automatic video identification, online with an invitation letter, online using a digital certificate or DNIe, or face to face at a registration office. A basic-level registration is not accepted for every procedure; Cl@ve signing requires the advanced level, which means video identification checked by a public employee, a certificate, or a visit to an office.

**The FNMT certificate** is a digital certificate that you install in your browser. It is broadly accepted, though setting it up and shifting it between devices takes some effort.

**idCAT** is the Catalan government's digital identity. It is useful for Generalitat business and many local procedures, but it does not stand in for Cl@ve or the FNMT certificate in every case.

Most residents finish up with one state option (Cl@ve or FNMT) plus idCAT if they regularly deal with Catalan administration.

## Barcelona specifics

- **Consider offices beyond the city.** Your fingerprint appointment may take place at any office across Barcelona province, so if your slot is outside the city, look up Rodalies times the evening before.
- **Register on the padrón first.** A number of immigration and tax procedures become simpler once you are on the padró (padrón in Spanish). It is covered in our [guide to the padró](https://barna.news/empadronamiento-barcelona-how-to-register-padro/).
- **010.** The city's line for information and procedures, 010, is free when calling from Barcelona and is staffed every day from 7am to 11pm (931 537 010 from outside the metropolitan area, at the ordinary rate). It deals with municipal matters such as the padró; immigration appointments are handled by the state, so 010 is unable to create those slots.

## FAQ

### Can I book my TIE fingerprints in a different town from where I live?

Yes. You are free to pick any office in Barcelona province for the fingerprint appointment. Selecting "cualquier oficina" brings up every one of them in a single view.

### Is it legal to pay a gestor for an appointment?

Hiring a gestor for guidance or form-filling is perfectly lawful, yet securing the appointment costs nothing through the official portal. Ask for written confirmation of what the fee covers and what occurs should no slot become available.

### Where do I pick up my TIE card?

At the police station shown on the receipt from your fingerprint appointment, by booking the separate "recogida de tarjeta" slot.

### Do I need to go to an office to get Cl@ve?

Not always. Online sign-up is available through the Cl@ve portal in several ways: by video identification, with an invitation letter, or using a digital certificate. Registration can also be completed face to face at a registration office.

### Do I need a Spanish phone number to book?

You will need a Spanish mobile number to hand before starting, as the booking process sends the confirmation code by text message.
