## Seven-Month Renovation to Affect Key Metro Corridor

Transports Metropolitans de Barcelona (TMB) has announced plans to carry out comprehensive track renewal works on the L5 metro line next summer, requiring the full closure of five stations for several weeks. The project, which involves replacing ageing ballast track with concrete slab track over 3,050 metres of double track between Verdaguer and Camp de l'Arpa, will last approximately seven months and is due to begin preparatory work overnight from Sunday to Thursday. The main phase of the works will see complete service interruptions on the L5\. From 25th June to 12th August 2027, there will be no service between Verdaguer and Camp de l'Arpa. This will then extend to include Diagonal station from 12th to 31st August 2027\. These dates are indicative and subject to confirmation once the contract is awarded.

## Affected Stations and Alternative Routes

The stations impacted by the closures are Diagonal, Verdaguer, Sagrada Família, Sant Pau | Dos de Maig, and Camp de l'Arpa. These form a critical junction in the network, with interchanges to the L3 at Diagonal, the L4 at Verdaguer, and the L2 at Sagrada Família. Passengers will be directed to use these alternative lines, while TMB plans to operate shuttle buses along the affected corridor and adapt public spaces to accommodate them.

### Infrastructure and Accessibility Upgrades

The €15.2 million project (excluding VAT) includes replacing gravel-based ballast with concrete slab track to reduce vibrations and improve ride smoothness. It also involves renewing drainage systems, upgrading ventilation shafts, including reopening the Gaudí shaft at Provença-Marina, and renovating the railway switch at Sagrada Família to allow greater operational flexibility. A new switch will also be installed 40 metres from Verdaguer station. Topographic adjustments will be made to improve train-to-platform alignment, aiding access for people with reduced mobility (PMR). These upgrades are part of a broader effort to modernise the L5, the second busiest metro line in Barcelona, which recorded 111.6 million passenger journeys last year.

> This intervention will allow for smoother train operation and better service resilience in the long term, reducing disruptions caused by track wear.

### Context of Ongoing L5 Improvements

The upcoming works follow a series of upgrades on the L5 over the past five years. In 2022, track renewal took place between Sagrera and Horta; in 2024, 3.6 km of track between Cornellà Centre and Collblanc was upgraded to concrete slab; and in 2026, platform height adjustments were made at Plaça de Sants. The direct connecting corridor between L1 and L5 at that station remains closed as part of ongoing accessibility improvements. Meanwhile, TMB has recently increased L5 service frequency, adding one extra train during weekday peak hours and two more on Saturdays between 10:00 and 21:00, reducing headways to 2 minutes 45 seconds at peak times and under 5 minutes on Saturdays.
