## Seat Availability Falls Nearly 10%

The number of seats offered on high-speed AVE trains between Barcelona and Madrid has dropped by almost 10% in the first half of 2026 compared to the same period last year, amounting to around 670,000 fewer seats. This decline marks the lowest quarterly offering since January to March 2021, during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic, according to analysis published on Saturday 31st October 2026\. Renfe Viajeros offered just over 1.76 million seats on the route between April and June 2026, significantly fewer than the approximately two million offered in previous fiscal years. French operator Ouigo provided 530,000 seats in the same period, the lowest since it began operating the route in 2021, when it offered just over 468,000.

## Accidents and Disruptions Undermine Confidence

Although the Barcelona-Madrid line was not the site of either of this year’s two major rail accidents, it has suffered repeated disruptions, lengthy delays, cancellations and a major engine fire on 12th October. A fatal crash in Adamuz, Córdoba, in early 2026 prompted infrastructure manager Adif to impose widespread speed restrictions across the network, extending journey times from just over two and a half hours to more than three. Some restrictions remain in place for track inspections, and the final services in both directions have been cancelled. These ongoing issues have created a damaging environment for operators.

> The decline in seat offerings reflects a broader crisis in passenger confidence and operational stability on Spain’s flagship rail corridor.

## Passenger Numbers in Sharp Decline

The Barcelona-Madrid route has lost approximately 1.5 million passengers in the first nine months of 2026 compared to the same period last year. A report by ACN on 23rd September 2026 confirmed that high-speed rail had lost over half a million users annually, with the Barcelona-Madrid corridor seeing usage fall from 3.9 million to 3.4 million passengers between the second quarters of 2025 and 2026\. Despite these setbacks, Renfe had previously promoted service expansions, including new direct AVE services between Madrid and Barcelona and additional frequencies, as part of a summer 2025 offering of over 22.5 million total seats across its network. However, current trends indicate a sharp reversal.
