Barcelona mayor Jaume Collboni is leading an alliance of European city leaders urging the European Union to include dedicated housing funding in its next long-term budget, the Multiannual Financial Framework (MFP), as reported by Beteve ([https://beteve.cat/politica/collboni-alcaldes-europeus-donaran-batalla-fons-ue-habitatge/](https://beteve.cat/politica/collboni-alcaldes-europeus-donaran-batalla-fons-ue-habitatge/?ref=barna.news)).

Speaking at a roundtable during the HOWS affordable housing fair in Barcelona, part of Smart City Expo, Collboni said cities like Barcelona need funding to combat the 'plague of housing unaffordability'. He described the housing crisis as a threat to democracy and the main driver of inequality in developed nations.

The alliance, Mayors for Housing, includes representatives from Milan, Dublin, Santiago de Chile and Toronto. They are calling for EU-level financial support to address soaring housing costs.

## Local Rent Controls and Future Outlook

On the same day, Barcelona’s Housing Commissioner Joan Ramon Riera told Beteve’s Bon dia, Barcelona that rent price controls have successfully slowed the rapid rise in rents over recent years. He said maintaining price stability, combined with rising household incomes, could eventually resolve the crisis.

> If we maintain price stability for a few more years and families improve their incomes, we can consider ourselves satisfied.

Riera added that Barcelona still has enough land to build housing for the next 15 to 20 years, offering hope that younger generations can remain in the city. However, he acknowledged 'healthy envy' of other European cities with larger public housing stock.
