Barcelona is the provincial capital with the highest price level in Spain, the study finds, with a price index of 110 compared to 100 for the cheapest towns. This makes the city one of the most expensive places to shop for groceries in the country. The average annual cost of a basket of 244 items, including fresh and packaged food, drinks, hygiene, and household products, amounts to €6,602\. The national average difference between shopping at the cheapest and most expensive store is €1,310 per year, but in Barcelona the gap is significantly wider. --- ## Catalan Towns Among Most Expensive Barcelona is not alone in Catalonia. The region ranks among the most expensive in Spain for supermarket prices, alongside Castilla y León, the Basque Country, Navarre, La Rioja, Cantabria, and Castilla-La Mancha. Cerdanyola del Vallès appears among the most expensive towns in the entire study, alongside Getxo (Basque Country), Pozuelo de Alarcón, and Majadahonda (both in the Madrid region). Conversely, Torrent, Vila-real, and Santa Pola in the Valencian Community have the lowest price indices, with the OCU setting their index at 100 as the optimal reference level. > The study thus highlights a difference that can go unnoticed by consumers: it's not enough to know if prices are rising or falling; where you shop also matters. ## Lidl and Mercadona Cut Prices, Sánchez Romero Most Expensive Among supermarket chains, Sánchez Romero has the highest price index at 176, followed by Hipercor, El Corte Inglés, and Supercor. Nationally, the OCU identifies Dani as the cheapest chain, followed by Family Cash and Tifer. Lidl, Mercadona, and Aldi have all reduced prices compared to the previous year. Lidl now offers the cheapest basket in 60 Spanish localities, up from 18 in 2025, while Mercadona has doubled its presence as the most economical option. Carrefour Market reduced prices by 2.7%, Lidl by 1.9%, Mercadona by 1.8%, and Aldi by 1.4%. For economy-range products, Mercadona cut prices by 5.6% and Lidl by 4.7%.
