The municipal programme provides educational and family support for children and adolescents aged 5 to 16 who face neglect risks or socio-economic vulnerability. The Saturday service has 165 places across the three districts. Families cannot apply directly: access is through a referral from basic social services or a specialised social service, so parents and carers seeking support should contact the social-service team already working with their family. Barcelona City Council said the service is designed to provide support at times when usual provision is reduced, particularly Saturdays during the school year and August. It includes staff who provide individual support for children and young people with special educational needs, to help them take part in activities. ## August provision extended to 16-year-olds The City Council reported that 315 children and adolescents attended summer SIS activities in August 2026 at five sites: one in Sant Andreu, two in Sant Martí and two in Nou Barris. - Before 2026, August activities were limited to children aged 5 to 12. - In 2026, the summer provision was extended to include 13 to 16-year-olds. - The combined August and weekend provision offers 480 places for children and young people aged 5 to 16 and their families. Sonia Fuertes, Barcelona's Commissioner for Social Action, said the strengthened services form part of the city's 2025–2030 Strategy for Combating Child Poverty. She said Saturday and August provision gives vulnerable children educational spaces, support and guidance while maintaining continuity of care for families. --- ## Nearly 5,000 children supported through the wider network According to the [Ajuntament de Barcelona](https://ajuntament.barcelona.cat/premsa/2026/09/20/barcelona-consolida-latencio-a-infants-i-adolescents-en-situacio-de-vulnerabilitat-i-risc-durant-tot-lany-amb-el-servei-de-cap-de-setmana-i-dagost/?ref=barna.news), the city’s SIS network has 2,500 places and has supported nearly 5,000 children to date. The services work with children, adolescents and their families to prevent, identify and respond to situations of risk. The wider network includes six Socio-Educational Family Spaces for children aged 0 to 3 and their families, as well as two municipal day-care services and 28 subsidised centres managed by 20 social organisations. Those day-care and open-centre services provide 1,080 places for children and adolescents aged 3 to 16. Barcelona also runs four municipal family-support services for households with children and young people aged 0 to 17, in Sant Martí, Les Corts-Sants, Gràcia and Nou Barris.
