## Protest Disrupts Cruise Terminal Access

Access to the cruise terminal at Barcelona’s Adosado Pier was cut off today at midday after port workers erected fiery barricades during a protest against austerity measures. The demonstration, called by the Port of Barcelona’s works committee, filled the access walkway with thick black smoke, forcing passengers to walk several kilometres into the city. Four cruise ships were affected by the disruption, which occurred at a key docking point for cruise lines operating in the region.

## Staff Protest Over Pay Cut

The protest was triggered by the Port Authority’s decision to cancel the outstanding proportional payment of the 2025 performance-related bonus, worth 16 euros per worker. This cut is part of an adjustment plan imposed by the General Intervention of the State Administration (IGAE) after uncovering unauthorised spending amounting to nearly one million euros. Workers carried a banner reading "Enough of austerity measures", expressing frustration over what they describe as repeated economic penalties despite management-level roles operating outside standard collective agreements.

> The works committee has warned of further industrial action if economic rights are not respected.

According to reports, around 57 senior management positions at the Port of Barcelona are paid outside the collective bargaining agreement, receiving higher salaries and additional benefits such as meal vouchers. The Authority has stated it uses savings from unfilled positions to compensate these roles. The IGAE’s intervention follows a second major budget deviation in nine years, with the previous one recorded in 2017 at around 700,000 euros. Despite record revenues in 2025, the Port Authority is now implementing cost-cutting measures to restore financial balance.

### Passenger Impact and Ongoing Tensions

Cruise passengers arriving today faced significant delays and logistical challenges due to the blocked access route. The protest highlights growing tensions between staff and management, particularly over perceived inequities in how financial shortfalls are addressed. The works committee had announced the demonstration in advance, following the Port Authority’s communication that it would withhold the pending bonus payments "as a measure of prudence". Union representatives argue this breaches prior collective agreements. The Port Authority, led by José Alberto Carbonell, maintains the cuts are necessary due to a "technical budget imbalance" and plans to correct past discrepancies using future salary increases.
