## Officers urged to speak Catalan first

The Barcelona City Council has issued an internal informational note instructing members of the Guàrdia Urbana to conduct their first verbal interaction with citizens in Catalan, whether during police operations or duties involving information, assistance, or mediation. This guidance, part of an initiative called 'Fem-ho clar i català' (Let's do it clearly and in Catalan), has been disseminated through the Guàrdia Urbana Headquarters and encourages officers to begin conversations in Catalan when addressing any member of the public.

## Promoting Catalan internally

The note also calls for promoting the natural use of Catalan within the working environment among officers, describing it as the 'own language of the City Council'. The aim is to make Catalan the predominant language within the municipal police force over Spanish.

## Political backlash

The directive has drawn criticism from opposition parties. Gonzalo de Oro, president of the Municipal Group of Vox, accused Mayor Collboni of overreach, calling the move 'ideological sectarianism' rather than public service. Daniel Sirera, leader of the PP in the city council, echoed the sentiment, stating that the municipal police urgently need more resources, Taser guns, and cameras to combat crime instead of language mandates.
