# Barcelona Council Awards Felip II Market Renovation Contract

## Project Design and Supervision Contract Awarded

The Municipal Institute of Markets of Barcelona (IMMB) has awarded the contract this October for the drafting of renovation projects and site supervision at the Mercat de Felip II in the Sant Andreu district. The contract, valued at over €159,000, has been granted to the firm Taller Sau SLP. The award includes the development of the preliminary, basic, and executive design phases, as well as construction site supervision and support during the initial operational phase following completion.

## Renovation Aims to Modernise Market Access and Layout

The primary goals of the renovation are to improve accessibility, increase building transparency by redesigning the façade, and enhance the surrounding public space. Inside, the project will create new access points to improve vertical circulation and reconfigure shared areas such as offices, multipurpose rooms, restrooms, and service zones. The logistics area will also be relocated to improve operational efficiency.

## Part of Broader City Market Modernisation Plan

This intervention forms part of the Strategic Market Plan launched this year under Barcelona’s designation as European Capital of Commerce. It also aligns with the IMMB’s broader market refurbishment programme. The design phase is expected to be completed before summer 2027, with construction scheduled to begin by the end of that year. The total estimated cost of the full renovation is approximately €3 million. Residents and traders in Sant Andreu are expected to benefit from improved facilities and a revitalised public market environment once works are finished.
