The admission came after a linguistic rights activist, @miqu3lm0la, filed a complaint regarding the absence of Catalan in 76 commercial premises across the city. The Ombudsman shared the council’s reply on social media, revealing that municipal authorities prioritise “awareness-raising and informational actions” over enforcement. Instead of inspections, the Municipal Consumer Information Office (OMIC) sends advisory letters reminding businesses of their legal obligation to provide consumer-facing materials, including signage, invoices, and contracts, in Catalan. However, the council acknowledged these notices are not followed up with verification checks to confirm compliance. > The council prioritises awareness-raising and informational actions prior to any inspection. General measures cited include a pilot study in the Gràcia district to assess Catalan usage in commerce and informational outreach on La Rambla.
