Barcelona City Council started essential maintenance work this week on fire prevention strips within the municipal area, particularly around Collserola Park, to reduce wildfire risk. This critical initiative covers 346 hectares across five districts, protecting both natural spaces and urban areas.

The [Institute of Parks and Gardens](http://www.bcn.cat/?ref=barna.news) is carrying out these operations in Gràcia, Horta-Guinardó, Les Corts, Nou Barris, and Sarrià-Sant Gervasi. These districts border the vast Collserola Natural Park, which serves as Barcelona's green lung. The council has allocated a budget of €400,000 for these efforts. Workers are clearing weeds and prioritising the removal of dry and dead vegetation. This work aims to leave the forest mass at optimal densities, significantly minimising fire spread during high-risk periods.

## Managing Wildfire Risk Near Urban Areas

Barcelona experiences hot, dry summers, making fire prevention a critical annual task for the city. The proximity of Collserola Park to densely populated urban areas means that wildfires pose a direct threat to homes and residents. These preventative measures create firebreaks, slowing down or stopping the advance of flames. This strategy protects the 260,000 residents living in the Eixample district, for example, and many others in adjacent areas.

## Addressing [African Swine Fever](https://vertexaisearch.cloud.google/?ref=barna.news) in Collserola

The current context includes the presence of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Collserola Park. Existing regulations restrict certain types of work in affected areas due to this disease. However, the council considers fire prevention work critical for public safety. Therefore, these operations will proceed with the necessary disinfection measures. This ensures the safety of both residents and the park's wildlife. The council works closely with environmental agencies to manage the disease's impact while maintaining essential services.

## Protecting Barcelona's Green Belt

These maintenance efforts will continue, ensuring Barcelona's green spaces are better prepared for the upcoming fire season. The city's commitment to these preventative measures helps safeguard the natural environment and urban areas from potential wildfires, a recurring concern for residents living near the park.
