## Barcelona Officially Pursues WorldPride 2030

Barcelona has formally launched its bid to host WorldPride 2030, positioning the city as a global leader in LGBTI+ rights advocacy. The initiative, led by Pride Barcelona and supported by the Ajuntament de Barcelona, the Catalan government’s Department of Equality and Feminism, and the Ministry of Equality and Tourism, aims to showcase the city’s long-standing commitment to diversity and human rights. Mayor Jaume Collboni announced the bid via social media, stating, "Aquest 2030, el camí de la llibertat ens porta a casa" (In 2030, the path to freedom brings us home). The slogan underscores Barcelona’s historical role in the fight for civil liberties and its ambition to serve as a platform for international dialogue. The formal bid was presented in June 2026 in Washington, D.C., during WorldPride 2025, and has since been promoted through institutional presentations in Amsterdam, Rome, and Madrid.

## WorldPride and Its Significance

WorldPride, authorised by InterPride, is a biennial global event that combines large-scale parades, cultural festivals, and a human rights conference. It draws millions of visitors and places the host city at the centre of international discourse on equality. According to the Ajuntament de Barcelona, hosting the event would reinforce the city’s reputation as a pioneer in non-discrimination policies. Under the theme 'Let’s Think, Let’s Answer, Let’s Change', the bid seeks to create space for reimagining the future of the LGBTQIA+ community, with Barcelona offering itself as a venue for reflection and political engagement.

> Barcelona and Catalonia are fully prepared to host WorldPride 2030 and, above all, to continue being a space of freedom, respect, and dignity for everyone.

, Eva Menor Cantador, Minister for Equality and Feminism, Government of Catalonia

## 2030: A Year of Historical Milestones

The selection of 2030 is intentional. It marks 50 years since the first LGBTI+ demonstrations in Catalonia, beginning with the 1977 Pride march on La Rambla, organised by the Front d’Alliberament Gai de Catalunya. That year also saw the decriminalisation of homosexuality in Spain, a milestone in the broader struggle for rights. The year 2030 will also mark 25 years since Spain legalised same-sex marriage in 2005, a landmark achievement in global LGBTI+ rights.

### International Solidarity and Advocacy

On Tuesday 20th October 2026, Mayor Collboni met in Warsaw with representatives of Campaign Against Homophobia (KPH), a Polish LGBTI+ organisation, to discuss rights in Poland and across Europe. The meeting aimed to strengthen international alliances and secure support for Barcelona’s bid. The city council frames the bid as a response to rising reactionary movements, positioning Barcelona as a refuge committed to defending progress and protecting future generations.
