- Description: How Barceloneta, Bogatell and Mar Bella compare, plus the other city beaches: which one fits which kind of visit, my score for each, and metro directions.

> In short: Barceloneta if you want a quick dip, Bogatell for the finest combination of position and tranquillity, Mar Bella when you fancy somewhere calmer, and Llevant if space matters most.

This guide is here to help you pick a beach for the day, for where you live or for guests. A large part of the shoreline you see now was built for the 1992 Olympics, which explains how near it lies to the centre. The sea is not the finest on the Costa Brava. Even so, being only minutes from the old town gives the coast here a character that most city seafronts lack.

## Which beach fits your life

- **Ciutat Vella:** Barceloneta takes the prize for convenience.
- **Eixample and El Born:** Nova Icària or Bogatell offer the best compromise.
- **Poblenou, Sant Martí and Diagonal Mar:** Mar Bella, Nova Mar Bella or Llevant are the sensible options for everyday use.

## The beaches at a glance

The ratings below are mine, out of five.

| Beach | Best for | My rating | Nearest L4 metro |
| -------------- | ----------------------------------------- | --------- | ------------------------ |
| Barceloneta | A quick dip, visitors, people-watching | 2.5 | Barceloneta |
| Sant Sebastià | Busy, but a step quieter than Barceloneta | 3 | Barceloneta |
| Somorrostro | A middle ground that is still social | 3 | Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica |
| Nova Icària | Families, a proper half day, a local feel | 3.5 | Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica |
| Bogatell | Locals, location and calm | 4 | Llacuna |
| Mar Bella | A calmer, mixed crowd | 4 | Poblenou |
| Nova Mar Bella | Quieter, and further from the shops | 3.5 | Selva de Mar |
| Llevant | Space, at the far end | 3 | El Maresme-Fòrum |

Sant Miquel has been left out. I was unable to match it to a city beach on the council's list, and I would rather not guess.

## The rules that matter

- **Free to use.** The beaches are public and cost nothing. Sunbeds, lockers and certain equipment carry a charge. Beach games are lent out by the city at no cost, according to the [city's bathing and beaches page](https://www.barcelona.cat/en/what-to-do-in-bcn/bathing-and-beaches?ref=barna.news).
- **Flags.** Green indicates that swimming is fine, yellow means caution is needed, and red means bathing is prohibited. The Generalitat publishes the [state of each beach](https://interior.gencat.cat/ca/arees%5Fdactuacio/proteccio%5Fcivil/estatplatges/index.html?ref=barna.news). Check it before entering the water, and stay out after heavy rain.
- **Lifeguards.** The [2026 bathing season calendar](https://www.barcelona.cat/sites/default/files/arxius%5Frelacionats/Calendari%20temporada%20bany%202026%5F4.pdf?ref=barna.news) ran from 28 March to 4 October, with lifeguards on duty daily from 10:30 during the summer. Watch for the 2027 calendar when it is published.
- **Smoking.** It is prohibited on the sand, though it remains permitted in beach bars and on the promenades, [as 3Cat reported on the fines](https://www.3cat.cat/3catinfo/multes-a-les-platges-quan-fumar-a-la-sorra-posar-musica-alta-o-acampar-pot-sortir-car/noticia/3419054/?ref=barna.news). The cabinet approved a [national bill](https://www.euronews.com/health/2026/07/21/government-moves-to-ban-smoking-on-terraces-and-beaches-under-new-anti-tobacco-law?ref=barna.news) on 21 July 2026 that would extend the ban to bar terraces and beaches. It has not yet become law.
- **Petty theft.** It happens often. Keep your bag within reach, and a waterproof pouch for your phone is a worthwhile purchase.
- **Beach sheets.** Illegal sellers deal in counterfeit goods and 2 by 2 metre sheets. My rule: never hand over more than €8, and open the bidding low.

## Beach by beach

### Barceloneta (2.5)

Busy, central and near the action. Ideal for a dip after work, or a first outing with friends. Give it a miss if you are after peace and quiet, or if watching your bag would be a struggle. Metro: Barceloneta on L4.

### Sant Sebastià (3)

Slightly calmer than Barceloneta and a short stroll away. It is harder to get to, and the [Bastian Beach club](https://bastianbeach.com/contacto?ref=barna.news), only a few metres from the sand, cost it half a star in my book. Metro: Barceloneta on L4.

### Somorrostro (3)

A sound compromise: distant enough from the old town to feel like somewhere else, yet not too far along the coast. Metro: Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica on L4.

### Nova Icària (3.5)

Quieter and more local than the central beaches. A stray volleyball is the ever-present hazard. It has an accessible zone with bathing support, adapted parking and showers, so it works well for families and people with reduced mobility. Metro: Ciutadella-Vila Olímpica on L4.

### Bogatell (4)

My pick for the way it balances location and calm. Summer brings crowds, with more locals than on the central beaches, and there is [outdoor fitness equipment](https://barcelonaurbana.com/en/places/platja-del-bogatell?ref=barna.news). Metro: Llacuna on L4.

### Mar Bella (4)

Mar Bella resembles Bogatell but is less crowded, and it has a skate park and a sailing club close by. An official [nudist area](https://guia.barcelona.cat/en/detall/platja-de-la-mar-bella%5F92086030400.html?ref=barna.news) covers part of the beach. To my mind it has a relaxed, mixed atmosphere. Metro: Poblenou on L4.

### Nova Mar Bella (3.5)

Farther out and rather quieter. You are further from the shops and restaurants, which is exactly the appeal for some. Metro: Selva de Mar on L4.

### Llevant (3)

The last of the city beaches. Not worth the journey if you are based centrally, but a sound choice on a quiet day when you want room. From my own experience, it can smell at times. Metro: El Maresme-Fòrum on L4.

## Eating and buying near the sand

- **Forn Baluard**, Carrer del Baluard 38 in Barceloneta, bakes the sourdough I would buy. [Its own site](https://baluardbarceloneta.com/pages/obradors?ref=barna.news) lists opening hours of 07:30 to 20:30 on weekdays and Saturdays, and until 15:00 on Sunday. The pastries are decent, though not a patch on [Hofmann in El Born](https://hofmannpasteleria.com/?ref=barna.news).
- **Entrepaneria Compà**, Carrer de Sant Carles 29 in Barceloneta, is the kind of non-touristy spot I would choose. [Its own page](https://compacalabrese.com/sobre-nosotros/?ref=barna.news) confirms the business.
- **Vai Moana** is my favourite chiringuito. [Its website](https://vaimoanabcn.com/?ref=barna.news) says it stands on the sand at Bogatell, open daily from 10:00\. The site spells the name Vai Moana.
- The clubs below the Casino are, in my view, overpriced and largely mediocre. Walk two streets back for better value.

## The chiringuitos

No official count is published by the city. During the Barcelona 13 challenge, a drink at every beach bar along the route, I counted 13 places. A [2026 council tender](https://naciodigital.cat/societat/saber-catala-sera-per-primer-cop-un-avantatge-per-tenir-una-guingueta-a-barcelona.html?ref=barna.news) covers 14 beach bar and sunbed lots from Sant Sebastià to Mar Bella, and [two further sites were on offer](https://www.metropoliabierta.cat/sant-marti/20260709/barcelona-busca-llogater-dos-xiringuitos-davant-platges-ciutat/1003742777641%5F0.html?ref=barna.news) on the promenade. The 2026 bathing season ran from 28 March to 4 October, though each beach bar sets its own hours.

## What I could not confirm

- Gyms at Sant Sebastià and Mar Bella: none turned up on any current page.
- La Curandera and La Cala Barceloneta: only review-site listings appeared, so they are omitted.
- A Vol A Vol: its listed addresses do not agree, so it is omitted.
- La Granja del Barri: no current listing was found.
- Sant Miquel: absent from every city beach list.

Last checked: 13 October 2026.
