Barcelona City Council has started a €4.4 million reform on [Avenida Roma](https://www.barcelona.cat/?ref=barna.news) in Eixample, with work due to turn the stretch between Viladomat and Calàbria streets into a pedestrian promenade. The project is set to run until spring 2027.

The scheme includes a 7,700 square metre plaza in front of the Estel building, plus more green space and a single-platform service lane for emergency vehicles. The new plaza will extend the pedestrian area towards València street.

Jordi Valls, the Eixample district councillor, said the city has updated one of the district’s most important routes, making it more pleasant and sustainable while improving residents’ quality of life.

This phase completes the reurbanisation of Avenida Roma’s first two sections. Earlier works took place in 2004 and 2010, following the route designed to connect the avenue with Sants station, one of Barcelona’s main transport hubs.

The council also plans to continue the promenade towards Entença street in later phases. It already has a preliminary project for those next sections, with the aim of creating a continuous green corridor through Eixample.
