# Barcelona and at least 10 Catalan towns have Thursday off

Barcelona residents and people living in at least ten other Catalan municipalities will have a local public holiday on Thursday 24 September, according to Tot Barcelona. The day is not a public holiday across Catalonia or Spain, so the day off applies only in the municipalities that have designated it as a non-working local holiday.

The date falls during [La Mercè](https://barna.news/whats-on-la-merce/), Barcelona's main city festival, held in honour of one of the city's patron saints, La Mercè, alongside Santa Eulàlia. With the holiday falling on a Thursday, Tot Barcelona reports that many people may use it to take a four-day break.

## La Mercè programme begins on Wednesday

The festival is due to begin on Wednesday afternoon with a proclamation by Antoni and Meritxell Falgueras, owners of Celler de Can Gelida, a historic Sants establishment with 130 years of history.

For residents remaining in Barcelona over the long weekend, the programme will include concerts and public events until Sunday 27 September.

## Concert at Bogatell and pyromusical at Nova Icària

- On Saturday 26 September, from 20:00, the Mediterràniament stage at Bogatell beach will host [Love of Lesbian](https://barna.news/love-of-lesbian-to-play-final-barcelona/), La Pegatina, Al·lèrgiques al Pol·len and Svetlana.
- On Sunday 27 September, La Mercè will close with its traditional pyromusical show at Nova Icària beach.
- The pyromusical has moved from Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina because of work by Fira de Barcelona, the city's trade-fair institution, and its soundtrack will be created by Josep Montero of Oques Grasses.

People planning to attend the final pyromusical should go to Nova Icària beach rather than the usual Avinguda de la Reina Maria Cristina location.
