The Badalona City Council has secured funding and moved forward with plans to construct a new municipal nursery school, Bugui Bugui, on Ciència Street in the Montigalà neighbourhood. The facility will provide 107 places for children aged 0 to 3 and marks the first new public nursery in the city since 2013.

Construction is set to begin after the council approved a budget allocation of 3.44 million euros during an ordinary plenary session on 7 April, with all municipal groups voting in favour. The investment was confirmed in a budget modification notice published on the Ajuntament de Badalona website, which detailed the funding for the project’s tender process.

> It had been many years since a new nursery school was built in the city. The last one opened in 2013, during my first term as mayor, and now we are regaining momentum to meet the needs of many families.

The building, spanning over 1,000 square metres, will be constructed primarily from wood and designed to integrate with the adjacent Montigalà Park. It will feature seven classrooms, all with direct access to outdoor patios and covered areas, and include a dedicated family space for educational and support activities.

Energy efficiency and sustainability are central to the design, with materials and climate control systems selected to minimise environmental impact and energy costs. The school will operate as the sixth municipal nursery in Badalona, joining existing facilities Pam i Pipa, Ralet-Ralet, Virolet, Uni Dori and Nero Nas, which together serve 480 children.

## Opening Expected for 2027–2028 School Year

The Bugui Bugui nursery is scheduled to open at the start of the 2027–2028 academic year, pending completion of the 12-month construction period. The school’s name was chosen by the Badalona Children’s Council, reflecting community involvement in the project.

First Deputy Mayor Cristina Agüera highlighted the project as a step towards sustainable, modern educational infrastructure. She stated the new facility advances a model of environmentally responsible public services tailored to current family needs.
