## Aliança surge reshapes Catalan politics

A dramatic shift in Catalonia’s political landscape has emerged, with Aliança Catalana projected to rise as the second-largest party in the next regional election. According to a Sigma Dos poll for EL MUNDO, conducted between 1 and 9 September 2026, the party led by Sílvia Orriols could win 25 to 28 seats, up from just 2 in 2024, securing 16.7% of the vote and becoming the largest force within the pro-independence bloc.

## Illa's PSC wins but loses ground

Socialist President Salvador Illa’s PSC would remain the largest party with 31 to 33 seats (23.3% of the vote), but down 11 from 2024\. The drop reflects growing public dissatisfaction over public services, including strikes by teachers and doctors, persistent problems with Rodalies (commuter rail), rising insecurity, and economic hardship. Among voters, 41.5% believe the economy has worsened, 68% rate public healthcare as poor, and 67.8% say street insecurity has increased. Illa’s alignment with Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and agreements with pro-independence parties ERC and Junts have alienated some centrist voters who previously supported the PSC.

> The poll reflects Illa's difficulty in consolidating his project, unable to respond to and reverse the poor functioning of the Cercanías service, teacher and doctor strikes, increased insecurity in Catalan streets, and high rates of poverty and precariousness.

## Coalition deadlock looms

A three-party coalition of PSC, ERC, and Comuns would fall short of a majority with only 58 seats, due to ERC’s stagnation at 19–21 seats (14% of the vote) and the Comuns’ drop from 6 to 4 seats. Junts, meanwhile, would lose up to 13 seats, winning 19–22 (13.2%), as Carles Puigdemont awaits a potential return to Catalonia. Despite Aliança’s rise, a cordon sanitaire from all other parties isolates it from government participation. However, the pro-independence bloc as a whole would regain an absolute majority in the 135-seat Parliament, raising the prospect of political deadlock.

### Aliança’s strategic shift

Aliança has moderated its separatist tone while intensifying its anti-Muslim immigration rhetoric, allowing it to draw support beyond traditional independence voters. The poll indicates 7.4% of its support comes from PP voters and 12.4% from Vox. Its main gains, however, come from within the independence movement: 25.8% of its voters previously backed Junts, 10.4% ERC, and 4.4% the CUP.

### Vox and PP hold steady

Vox would win 13–15 seats (10.2%), up from 11, while the PP under Alejandro Fernández would also gain 13–15 seats (10.5%), holding steady despite Aliança’s rise. Both parties benefit from broader right-wing consolidation amid social discontent. The poll, based on 2,231 interviews with voters aged 18 and over in Catalonia, carries a margin of error of ±2.1% at a 95.5% confidence level.
