Fears over the safety and reliability of high-speed rail are driving a shift in travel habits, with more business commuters between Barcelona and Madrid choosing flights over the [AVE](https://barna.news/barcelona-madrid-ave-seat-offer-hits/). Recent accidents and ongoing operational issues have eroded confidence in the rail service, prompting passengers to opt for air travel despite its historically less favourable reputation.

"My company let me choose, and I chose the plane 100%," said Alex, a new monthly commuter for work. He admitted that while he once feared flying, a recent rail accident has made him feel safer in the air, even if statistics suggest otherwise. His experience reflects a broader trend: passengers who once preferred trains for comfort and productivity are now prioritising punctuality and peace of mind.

Alberto, who travels to Madrid twice a month, had an [AVE](https://barna.news/barcelona-madrid-ave-resumes-with/) ticket booked for today but switched to a flight due to fears of delays or cancellations. "The plane always had a worse reputation than the train, but right now it's flipped," he said. Others, like Rosa, whose work involves visiting hospitals across Spain, say their companies are now actively discouraging train use. "It's going to be hard for me to take the train. Whenever I can, I'm going to choose the plane, at least until we can truly confirm that it's safe," she stated.

## Increased Demand, Higher Prices

The surge in air travel is already affecting the Barcelona-Madrid air shuttle. Eric, who flies to Madrid about three times a week, says he’s noticed more passengers, rising prices, and the need to book further in advance. Where a same-day or next-day ticket used to suffice, he now plans bookings days ahead to secure suitable flights.

Patricia, a two- to three-times-a-month traveller, recently switched from defending the train to relying on planes, though recent security alerts have also heightened her anxiety about flying. She now faces uncertainty on both fronts, with rail delays and flight disruptions weighing on her decisions.

While not all commuters have changed their habits, some, like Carlos and Silvia, have long preferred flying, the overall pattern points to a significant shift. Those who already used planes are seeing the consequences: fuller flights and tighter schedules.

## Rail System Under Scrutiny

The root of the problem may lie in outdated infrastructure. A fatal crash on 28 October near Urda, Toledo, involving two high-speed trains, one from Renfe and one from private operator Iryo, was linked to failures in the LZB signalling system, an older German technology still in use on the Madrid–Andalusia line. While the Barcelona–Madrid route uses the modern European Rail Traffic Management System (ERTMS), broader concerns about maintenance and safety protocols persist.

Transport Minister Óscar Puente recently walked back suggestions of an immediate, full closure of the Barcelona–Madrid line during upgrades, calling it a sector debate rather than an imminent decision. The Generalitat has pushed to keep the line running, even at reduced speeds, citing its importance for regional connectivity.

Despite reassurances, the cumulative effect of delays, reduced frequencies, and safety incidents since January has taken its toll. As reported by *El País* on 18 October, the corridor has seen worsening reliability, with some journeys now exceeding three hours. According to Renfe, services between Madrid and Barcelona are being progressively restored, but uncertainty remains.
