The operation follows severe storms between 3 and 4 October 2026 that disrupted rail services across Catalonia. Adif has mobilised 29 work teams, involving over 110 personnel and 71 units of machinery, including cranes, dump trucks and backhoe loaders. The effort focuses on restoring infrastructure on lines R4 Nord, R1, [R11](https://barna.news/storm-leaves-r1-section-and-r11-without/), R2 Nord and R2 Sud, where landslides, fallen trees and washed-out ballast caused significant damage. --- ## Rail disruptions and [safety concerns](https://barna.news/rodalies-drivers-halt-trains-over/) The Plaça de Catalunya tunnel was one of the most severely affected areas, requiring 48 hours of continuous pumping with three units to remove accumulated water. This cut R1 services from Saturday 3 October until the morning of Tuesday 6 October, the most heavily used line in the Rodalies network. On R4 Nord, a tree fell between Terrassa and Castellbell i el Vilar, while ballast erosion occurred between Terrassa and Sabadell Sud. Landslides also damaged cabling between Sabadell Nord and Terrassa Est, and two major slope failures, contained by protective netting, disrupted service between Cerdanyola del Vallès and Montcada Bifurcació. Elsewhere, a fallen tree blocked the R11 between Maçanet de la Selva and Caldes de Malavella. On R1, a small landslide between Sant Pol de Mar and Calella was repaired, and debris from streams was cleared between Arenys de Mar and Canet de Mar. R2 Nord saw ballast loss between Granollers and Cardedeu, while a tree fell onto overhead lines on R2 Sud between Vilanova and Cunit. > "We continue to work on the affected rivers and ravines to remove accumulated sediment, vegetation, and debris, and to restore proper water flow. We already have five teams activated in the Besòs, Ridaura, Vallès Oriental, and Occidental areas," said Sílvia Paneque, Minister of Territory. --- ## Gradual service restoration Despite progress, service restoration has been complicated by safety disputes. On 6 October, the SEMAF drivers’ union refused to operate on reopened sections of R1, R11, R13, R14 and R17, citing incomplete safety documentation from Adif and Renfe. The union insisted that operations resume only after all required safety checks and reports were provided. By 7 October, SEMAF had reviewed and approved safety reports for key sections, allowing Rodalies services to gradually resume. However, some lines continued to operate with delays or partial closures as of 12 October, particularly where structural assessments remained ongoing. Adif reported that repairs to the most affected sections across the network will cost over €250,000\.
